Product Description

Let me Elucidate: I love versatility. And with the Elucidate hat, it’s like you get two in one. Knit from the bottom up, this hat has a generous reversible cabled brim that transitions into lots of glorious, slouchy stockinette. However, if the day is extra brisk, the brim can be folded up for double thickness over the ears, converting the hat into a fitted beanie. Best of all, it’s sized from preemie up to giant adult!

Elucidate Hat by Kino Knits

What Is Being Made

The Elucidate is a reversible cabled brim hat designed by Kino Knits, offering versatile styling options in a single knitted garment. This worsted-weight hat features a generous reversible cabled brim that transitions into slouchy stockinette, providing two distinct looks. The brim can be worn down for a relaxed aesthetic or folded up for double thickness over the ears, converting the hat into a fitted beanie suitable for colder weather. The pattern is sized from preemie through giant adult, making it accessible for a wide range of head circumferences.

Techniques and Construction

The Elucidate hat is knit from the bottom up in the round, a construction method that allows for seamless shaping and continuous fabric development. The reversible cabled brim is the defining technical feature, creating visual interest and textural depth on both sides of the fabric. The transition from the structured cable pattern to the slouchy stockinette body demonstrates thoughtful design that balances stitch definition with relaxed drape. The ability to fold the brim for dual functionality showcases the versatility inherent in the pattern's construction.

Stitches Used

  • Cable stitches – featured prominently in the reversible brim, creating the textured, dimensional pattern
  • Stockinette stitch – used throughout the slouchy body of the hat for smooth, classic knit fabric

Materials Required

Yarn: Worsted-weight yarn is the primary material. The sample shown uses Rainbow Heirloom Sweater in 100% superwash merino, with yardage of 250 yards (229 meters) per 4.06 ounces (115 grams). The colorway featured in the sample is Killer Flamingo.

Needles: US 4 (3.5 mm) needles for knitting small circumference in the round, or the size needed to achieve proper gauge.

Additional Tools and Notions: Five stitch markers (with one being unique for marking the beginning of rounds), two cable needles for manipulating cable stitches, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors.
