Product Description

Piece is worked seamlessly from the top down. The back neck is shaped by working back and forth using short-rows. After the neck shaping, the Yoke is worked in the round, increasing stitches every few rounds while the Fair Isle pattern is worked, and then ending with several rounds of raglan increases. When the yoke is complete, the Sleeves and Body are divided and the Sleeves are placed on hold while the Body is worked to the bottom edge. Then the Sleeves are worked to the cuff.

What Is Being Made

The Ella Pullover is a knitted sweater designed as an intermediate-level project. This pullover features colorwork elements and is constructed using circular knitting techniques, making it a modern, wearable garment suitable for various skill levels within the intermediate range.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern is designed for knitting as the primary craft. The sweater is worked primarily in the round using circular needles, which is an efficient method for creating seamless garments. The construction method allows knitters to work continuously in rounds rather than flat pieces, reducing finishing work and creating a cohesive fabric.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The Ella Pullover incorporates several key knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Stockinette Stitch (St st) — The primary fabric stitch, worked flat in rows or in rounds to create a smooth, classic knit texture
  • Fair Isle Pattern — A traditional colorwork technique worked from a chart, allowing multiple colors to be incorporated into the fabric in a structured, repeating design
  • Right Lifted Increase (RLI) — A shaping technique used to add stitches while maintaining the integrity of the fabric
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog) — A decrease method used for shaping and creating the garment's silhouette

The pattern uses stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction points, and stitch holders or waste yarn to hold stitches temporarily during assembly.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Ella Pullover is designed to be worked with sport weight yarn, specifically Swan's Island All American Collection, which is 100% USA Rambouillet wool. Each skein contains 40 grams and 185 yards.

The colorway shown in the pattern uses five coordinated colors:

  • Main Color (MC): AAS218 Sand — 3 to 6 skeins depending on size
  • Color A: AAS217 Bark — 1 skein
  • Color B: AAS204 Cloud — 1 skein
  • Color C: AAS235 Dew — 1 skein
  • Color D: AAS231 Ocean — 1 skein
  • Color E: AAS220 Ecru — 1 skein

The pattern requires two sizes of circular needles and a set of double-pointed needles (dpn): US size 2½ (3mm) and US size 4 (3.5mm). Circular needles are available in 20-inch and 29-inch lengths. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to obtain the correct gauge.

Gauge and Fit

Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit. The pattern specifies:

  • Stockinette Stitch gauge: 6 stitches and 8½ rounds = 1 inch when worked with the larger needle
  • Fair Isle Pattern gauge: 6¾ stitches and 8½ rounds = 1 inch when worked from the chart with the larger needle

The pattern is available in multiple sizes, ranging from size 3 to size 6, with yardage requirements scaling accordingly. Knitters are advised to check their gauge carefully before beginning to ensure the finished garment achieves the desired fit.
