**Description:**Inspired by the simple and wave like texture of the Elinor Pullover and Elinor Cardigan, the Elinor Jane Cardigan builds on this line with more easy to achieve texture and large ribbed sections, making this cardigan a cozy new addition.
This cardigan is worked in 1 back panel, 2 front panels, and 2 sleeves - which are seamed together and a large and cozy lapel is then worked directly onto the body. Be sure to check your blocked gauge on the ribbing so it doesn’t get too tight for ya, it’s supposed to be squishy and not distort the design.

What Is Being Made
The Elinor Jane Cardigan is an intermediate-level crochet cardigan constructed in four separate sections that are later joined together. The garment consists of a back panel, two front panels, two sleeves, and a lapel component. This modular construction approach allows crafters to work on distinct pieces before assembling them into a finished cardigan.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs several specialized crochet techniques to create texture and visual interest. The primary construction method uses standard crochet stitches worked in rows, with attention paid to working into specific loops of previous stitches. One notable technique featured in this pattern is Back Third Loop Only (BTLO), also known as the Camel Stitch. This technique involves identifying and working into the third loop that runs along the back of a half double crochet stitch, creating a distinctive textured appearance. When executing BTLO, the crocheter leans the stitch toward themselves to access this third loop, which faces the worker when viewing the back of the previous row's stitches.
Stitches Used
The Elinor Jane Cardigan utilizes the following crochet stitches:
- Chain (Ch) – the foundation stitch used to begin sections
- Single Crochet (Sc) – a basic short stitch used in specific sections of the pattern
- Half Double Crochet (Hdc) – a medium-height stitch that forms the primary structure
- Back Loop Only (BLO) – working into only one loop of a stitch rather than both loops, used for specific gauge measurements
- Back Third Loop Only (BTLO) – the specialized technique described above for textured sections
- Slip Stitch (Slip St) – used for joining rounds and sections together
Materials and Tools
Crafters will need worsted weight yarn, classified as medium or size #4 weight yarn. Two crochet hooks are required: a US I (5.50mm) hook and a US H (5.00mm) hook. Additional notions include scissors, a measuring tape, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming sections together.
Gauge Information
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies two gauge measurements when blocked: 11 rows by 12 half double crochet stitches equals 4 inches using the US I hook, and 12 rows by 16 single crochet stitches (worked in back loop only) equals 4 inches using the US H hook. Checking gauge before beginning ensures the cardigan will fit as intended.
Skill Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Elinor Jane Cardigan is suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore more advanced techniques such as working into specific loops and assembling multiple components into a finished garment.
