Product Description
The beautiful electric blue in Mad Scientist Yarns Cosmic Candy colorway delights me to no end. It floods me with memories of my grandmother, Hazel, who I used to visit a province over in British Columbia during our summer vacations. She taught seniors line dancing for several years, so my brother and I would be brought to the dance hall to watch (and sometimes participate) in line dancing with all these lovely folks in their western wear… which entailed that electric blue.
Worked in the round, Electric Slide contains both cuff-down and toe-up written directions and a chart for the pattern stitch. The pattern has instructions for an afterthought heel, but you may substitute whatever heel you enjoy using.
The pattern is written for the magic loop method for knitting socks; however, the design could be worked on double-pointed needles or mini-circulars instead should you prefer.
Electric Slide Socks by rhyFlower Knits
What is Being Made
Electric Slide is a downloadable knitting pattern for custom-fitted socks designed by rhyFlower Knits. This project creates a pair of socks with finished circumference measurements ranging from 6 inches to 9 inches (15 to 23 centimeters) around the ball of the foot, accommodating multiple foot sizes. The pattern is available in a toe-up construction method, allowing knitters to try on the socks as they work and customize the leg length to their preference.
Skill Level and Difficulty
Electric Slide is classified as an Easy skill level project, making it an excellent choice for beginner knitters who are ready to tackle their first pair of socks. The straightforward construction and basic techniques required mean that knitters new to sock knitting can successfully complete this project while building confidence in their craft.
Knitting Techniques Used
This sock pattern employs the toe-up construction method, a popular technique that begins knitting from the toe and progresses upward toward the calf. This approach offers several advantages for custom fitting: knitters can try on their socks during the knitting process to ensure proper fit before committing to the full leg length, and they can easily adjust the total yardage used based on their desired sock height. The pattern utilizes circular needles for seamless, in-the-round knitting, which creates a continuous tube of fabric without seams.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Electric Slide socks are constructed primarily in stockinette stitch, the most fundamental and versatile stitch in knitting. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth, classic fabric with a distinctive V-pattern appearance on the right side. The pattern also incorporates decreases as a shaping technique, essential for tapering the sock at the toe and shaping the heel area to achieve a proper fit around the foot and ankle. The sample shown in the pattern was knit on 64 stitches using the toe-up version, providing a reference point for gauge and construction.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
Electric Slide requires fingering weight yarn, specifically a 4-ply yarn weight that is ideal for sock knitting due to its durability and smooth drape. The pattern calls for 200 to 500 yards (183 to 458 meters) of fingering weight yarn, depending on the foot length and desired leg height of the finished socks. The suggested yarn is Mad Scientist Yarns Fusion, a blend of 75% Superwash Merino and 25% Nylon with 437 yards (400 meters) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams), available in the colorway Cosmic Candy. This yarn blend combines the softness and temperature regulation of merino wool with the durability and elasticity of nylon, making it well-suited for hardwearing sock garments.
The recommended needles are US1 (2.25 millimeter) circular needles measuring 32 to 40 inches (82 to 102 centimeters) in length, or whatever size is needed to obtain the correct gauge. Circular needles of this length allow for comfortable magic loop or two-at-a-time knitting techniques commonly used in sock construction. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, scrap yarn for holding stitches, and stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern specifies a gauge of 9 stitches by 11 rounds in stockinette stitch equal 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) after blocking. Achieving the correct gauge is emphasized as crucial for obtaining proper sock fit; variations in gauge will result in noticeable size differences in the finished socks. Knitters are encouraged to knit and block a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure their needles and yarn combination will produce the intended measurements.
