Product Description
“Eilean” (Gaelic for island) is a top-down seamless sweater, combining the best of yoke and raglan construction for an ultimate fit. Its slightly bell-shaped sleeves are comfortably wide, but not in the way, and the all-over texture makes this garment an entertaining knit. With a small amount of simple fair isle knitting on the yoke – just enough to be decorative, but not as much as to be intimidatingly complicated – it is a good project to get acquainted with colorwork in the round. “Eilean” sweater is knit in our “Delicious” yarn – a gorgeous blend of baby alpaca, silk and cashmere that is pleasant to work with, and equally pleasant to wear.
Eilean Sweater by Hanna Maciejewska
What is Being Made
Eilean is a top-down seamless sweater designed by independent knitter Hanna Maciejewska. The name "Eilean" is Gaelic for island, reflecting the designer's inspiration. This garment combines yoke and raglan construction techniques to create a fitted sweater with distinctive bell-shaped sleeves that are comfortably wide without restricting movement. The sweater features all-over texture throughout the body and a decorative fair isle colorwork section on the yoke, making it an engaging knitting project suitable for those looking to develop colorwork skills.
Construction and Techniques
Eilean is constructed using a top-down seamless method, meaning knitting begins at the neckline and progresses downward in the round without requiring seaming. This construction approach offers excellent fit customization as you knit. The sweater incorporates a hybrid yoke and raglan construction, combining the best elements of both techniques for an ultimate fit. The design includes simple fair isle knitting on the yoke—enough to be decorative without being intimidatingly complicated—making this an excellent introductory project for knitters new to colorwork in the round.
Stitches Used
The pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques including:
- Knit (k) – the basic stitch forming the foundation
- Knit through the back loop (k1tbl) – creates twisted stitches for texture
- Knit 2 stitches together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
- Doubled stitch (DS) – used for specific textural effects
- Make 1 Left (M1L) – an increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand from the front
- Fair isle colorwork – two-color stranded knitting on the yoke section
Materials
Eilean is designed to be knit in 4-ply yarn weight, a medium-weight yarn that provides excellent stitch definition for both the textural elements and fair isle colorwork. The pattern recommends the designer's "Delicious" yarn, which is a luxurious blend of baby alpaca, silk, and additional fibers. This fiber combination creates a soft, lustrous fabric with excellent drape—ideal for the bell-shaped sleeves and fitted yoke construction. Knitters will require appropriate needles for 4-ply yarn in both circular and double-pointed needle sizes to accommodate the top-down construction and in-the-round knitting method.
Difficulty Level
Eilean is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the construction method is straightforward, the inclusion of fair isle colorwork and various shaping techniques requires solid foundational knitting skills. This pattern is ideal for knitters who have completed several basic sweaters and are ready to expand their technical repertoire, particularly those seeking to develop confidence with two-color stranded knitting in the round.
