Product Description
Not only are these mittens super warm and comfy, but they are pretty quick to knit up as well! Easy, perfect for beginners... no double pointed needles are required. You can knit these with 2 straight needles! So whether you haven't learned how to do knitting in the round, or like me just prefer to knit mittens flat, this pattern was designed for you.
Instructions are given to do the seamless thumbs (with double pointed needles) AND the thumbs made with 2 straight needles. Instructions also include the directions for knitting these in stripes OR solid colors.
Included in this professionally-designed pattern are two adult sizes. The smaller size is probably better for teenagers and women, the larger size is more suited for men.

Easy Garter Mittens 2 Needles
What Is Being Made
Easy Garter Mittens 2 Needles are a pair of adult-sized mittens designed by Janet Jameson from Aunt Janet's Designs. This pattern creates mittens in two sizes: Adult Small and Adult Large. The mittens are constructed using a straightforward two-needle knitting technique, making them an accessible project for beginners learning fundamental knitting skills.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs basic knitting techniques suitable for novice knitters. The primary construction method uses flat knitting on two needles rather than circular needing, eliminating the need for knitting in the round. The pattern incorporates simple color changes throughout the design, allowing crafters to create visual interest by switching between two colors without cutting the yarn between color blocks. While the main mittens are worked flat on two needles, the pattern includes optional instructions for working the thumbs using double-pointed needles, though alternative methods are also provided for those preferring to stay with two needles throughout the entire project.
Stitches Used
The mittens are constructed primarily using garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row. This fundamental stitch creates a textured, reversible fabric that is ideal for beginners. The pattern also incorporates basic purl stitches in the cuff section to create a ribbed texture. The cuff is worked using alternating knit and purl rows to form a classic ribbed pattern that helps the mittens stay securely on the hands.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 3 to 3.5 ounces of bulky weight yarn. The pattern notes that two strands of worsted weight yarn can be substituted as an alternative. The sample mittens pictured in the pattern are made from two strands of "I Love This Yarn" in various color combinations.
- Needles: Size 10 (6.0mm) knitting needles for the main construction
- Additional Supplies: One stitch marker for tracking position, a stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends
Pattern Overview
The Adult Small size begins with casting on 27 stitches. The cuff section spans rows 1 through 14 and features the ribbed texture created by alternating knit and purl rows. Following the cuff, the main hand section begins at row 15 and continues with garter stitch construction. The pattern incorporates planned color changes at rows 15, 17, and 19, with the crafter dropping one color and picking up another to create striped sections without cutting yarn.
