Product Description
Make an ecofriendly fashion statement with this beautiful cowl made in recycled banana yarn.
It works up fast and delivers a gorgeous scarf that’s both lovely to wear and has a unique eyecatching slubby texture. This yarn is soft and silky with a slightly heavy feel to it. This makes this scarf feel lovely to wear and catches attention with it’s unusual look.
There is a FREE version on my website. The PDF also includes instructions for using any #5 bulky (UK chunky) weight yarn with revised stitch count. The overall look will be a little different without the texture of banana yarn and is a very easy cowl.
Level: Advanced Beginner due to yarn, the pattern is easy.

Easy Eco Cowl Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Easy Eco Cowl is an original crochet pattern designed by Janferie MacKintosh of The Crafty Therapist. This project creates a cowl—a versatile neck accessory that combines comfort with sustainable material choices. The pattern is specifically designed for beginners, making it an excellent introduction to cowl construction and eco-conscious crafting.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern emphasizes sustainable fiber choices. The recommended yarn weight is #5 Bulky (UK Chunky), requiring only 75g to 100g of yarn, approximately 30–50 yards. The primary recommended fiber is Banana yarn, an eco-friendly alternative derived from banana plants. As a secondary sustainable option, recycled spun sari silk is suggested for a slightly fuzzier texture. Standard bulky weight yarn may also be used, with adjusted stitch counts provided in the pattern.
An important note for crafters using Banana yarn or silk: these natural fibers may experience color bleeding. The pattern recommends pre-washing and rinsing the yarn hank until the water runs clear before beginning your project to minimize dye loss. Alternatively, the finished cowl can be gently hand-washed. For those working with strong color showing, products like Simplicol Farb-Fixerier are recommended to further prevent dye loss.
