Ear Flaps Double Pompom Toque Kids Ear Flaps Hat
What Is Being Made
This is a children's knitted toque hat featuring distinctive double pompoms and ear flaps. The design combines a classic winter hat silhouette with playful double pompom embellishments and functional ear flaps for warmth and coverage. The hat is worked in super chunky yarn, making it a quick and satisfying project suitable for knitters of all skill levels.
Craft and Techniques
The Ear Flaps Double Pompom Toque is created using knitting as the primary construction method. The pattern employs a combination of knitting techniques including circular knitting for the main crown and body of the hat, followed by the addition of ear flaps. Crochet is incorporated as a secondary technique for creating the side ties that secure the ear flaps. The pompoms are either handmade using a pompom maker or can be substituted with pre-made faux fur pompoms for convenience.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch used throughout this pattern is stocking stitch (also known as stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic fabric texture characteristic of many winter hats. Stocking stitch is worked by alternating knit and purl rows when working flat, or by knitting every round when working in the round on circular needles. This fundamental stitch is ideal for beginners and creates a neat, professional finish.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
- Yarn: Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn in Super Bulky weight (weight category 6). The pattern requires one ball of main color yarn and one ball of contrast color yarn specifically for the double pompoms.
- Needles: US 13/9mm straight needles or circular needles (16 inches long) for the main hat construction. US 13/9mm double pointed needles are used for working the ear flaps. Knitters with a loose gauge may need to size down to US 11 needles to achieve proper gauge.
- Crochet Hook: An 8mm crochet hook (or similar size) is used to create the side ties that attach to and secure the ear flaps.
- Additional Supplies: A darning needle for weaving in ends, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a pompom maker (such as the Clover brand size 3 3/8 inches) or pre-made faux fur pompoms, measuring tape, and scissors.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is designed to achieve a gauge of 9 stitches and 12 rows over 4 inches in stocking stitch using US 13/9mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating a hat that fits correctly. Knitters should swatch before beginning the project and adjust needle size as needed—those who knit loosely may need to drop down to US 11 needles to match the required gauge.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner difficulty, making it an excellent choice for new knitters or those looking for a quick, satisfying project. The use of super chunky yarn means stitches are large and easy to work with, and the straightforward stocking stitch construction requires only basic knitting knowledge. The addition of ear flaps and crochet ties introduces minimal complexity while remaining accessible to beginners.
