Product Description

A modern twist on the split level hemline creates a unqiue head-turning design. The main pattern is a 6 row basket stitch. The neat neckband is finished with 2 buttons, making this very stylish. I designed this garment in 4 sections as many people are not keen on having to use an intarsia way of working. You do then have to stitch the centre front and back seams, but using mattress stitch, or a fine back stitch, matching row for row is easy!

Dual Knitted Top by Pat Menchini

What Is Being Made

Dual is a downloadable knitting pattern for a stylish knitted top designed by independent designer Pat Menchini. This garment is a versatile piece suitable for intermediate knitters, available in six size options ranging from 32-34 inches to 52-54 inches bust measurement. The finished top features an actual bust circumference of 94 to 149 centimeters depending on size selected, with a length to shoulder of 60 to 63 centimeters.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This knitting project employs a two-color colorwork approach, utilizing Stylecraft Linen Drape yarn in two complementary shades to create visual interest and design definition. The pattern requires working with two different needle sizes during construction: smaller 3.25 mm needles (UK 10, US 3) and larger 4 mm needles (UK 8, US 6), which allows for different fabric densities in various sections of the garment. The use of contrasting needle sizes is a common technique in knitting to create ribbed edgings or fitted sections that transition into more relaxed fabric areas.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The Dual top is worked using a stitch pattern that requires careful tension control. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows over 10 centimeters when worked on 4 mm needles. Achieving accurate tension is essential for this project, as variations will affect both the finished measurements and the drape of the garment. Knitters are advised to test their tension before beginning and adjust needle sizes accordingly if their gauge runs loose or tight.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Dual top is designed to be worked in Stylecraft Linen Drape, a DK weight yarn offering 185 meters or 202 yards per 100-gram ball. This linen-based yarn choice provides excellent drape and breathability, making it ideal for a lightweight top suitable for warmer seasons. The pattern calls for two shade options:

  • Yarn A: Stylecraft Linen Drape in shade Peacock (3905) – 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, or 4 balls depending on size
  • Yarn B: Stylecraft Linen Drape in shade Lime (3902) – 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, or 4 balls depending on size

The two-color construction allows knitters to create striking color combinations with these contrasting shades. Yarn quantities listed are approximate and based on average requirements. When selecting replacement yarns, it is critical to match the specified tension to ensure proper garment fit and appearance.

Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and needles, the Dual top requires 2 buttons for closure, suggesting a buttoned front or placket detail that adds both functional and decorative elements to the finished garment.

Size Range and Fit

The pattern accommodates six different sizes with bust measurements to fit 81-86, 91-97, 102-107, 112-117, 122-127, and 132-137 centimeters respectively. This comprehensive sizing ensures that knitters of various body types can find an appropriate fit, with finished garments offering positive ease for comfortable wear.
