Product Description

This rectangular knit shawl is worked from the bottom edge up and features horizontal panels of Shetland lace patterns.

I recently visited the Shetland Islands, and on Unst, the northernmost island, I had the opportunity to learn a few traditional lace stitch patterns. Two traditional Unst patterns—Norik Drummie Bees (bumblebees) and Flukra (gently falling snowflakes)—are featured in this design. They are examples of true knitted lace in that the patterns are worked on both sides of the fabric.

Drummie Bees and Snowflakes Shetland-Inspired Rectangular Shawl

What Is Being Made

Drummie Bees and Snowflakes is a rectangular knit shawl designed by Michael Harrigan, inspired by traditional lace patterns from the Shetland Islands. This advanced-level knitting project features authentic Shetland lace techniques worked across horizontal panels, creating a sophisticated wrap suitable for experienced knitters.

Design and Construction

The shawl is worked from the bottom edge upward in a rectangular format. The design showcases two traditional Unst lace patterns: Norik Drummie Bees, which depicts bumblebees, and Flukra, which represents gently falling snowflakes. These patterns are characteristic examples of true knitted lace, as they are worked on both sides of the fabric rather than appearing on one side only. The shawl incorporates five distinct colors, transitioning from the darkest shade at the lower edge to the lightest color at the top, with intentional color overlap between each horizontal panel to create visual continuity.

Lace Techniques and Stitches

This pattern employs traditional Shetland lace techniques that require advanced knitting skills. The horizontal panels feature the authentic Norik Drummie Bees and Flukra stitch patterns, both of which are worked as reversible lace. The shawl is framed with an eyelet edge, adding a delicate finishing detail that complements the intricate lace panels throughout the design.
