Product Description
Dripping with Lace Knitted Shawl.
Make this easy to knit shawl in white for a special event or wedding. I have made one in white, black and another in turquoise to go with my summer dresses.
This is an easy to knit half circle shawl that is constructed with repeats of easy to knit eyelet then a deep hem of vintage Old Shale lace that is accentuated with pressing.
Make this your first lace shawl project. I provide a row by row table that you can mark off as you knit each row of this shawl.
I recommend using wooden or bamboo needles. The yarn doesn’t slip of the needles as easily as it does with plastic or metal.
I am a tight knitter so size 7 (US) needles are recommended but if you are a loose knitter, try size 6.
From tip to tip, the finished shawl measures 40 inches wide and 18 inches deep from neck to bottom edge.
Any lace weight yarn can be used with this pattern.

Dripping with Lace: Your First Knitted Lace Shawl
What is Being Made
Dripping with Lace is a knitted lace shawl designed by KnittyDebby as an accessible introduction to lace knitting. This shawl project is specifically crafted for knitters new to lace techniques, offering an intermediate-level pattern that combines traditional lace construction with modern design sensibilities.
Yarn and Materials
This shawl requires approximately 500 to 700 yards of lace weight yarn or thread, making it a moderately-sized project suitable for various shawl styles. The pattern calls for Size 7 (US) needles, equivalent to 4.5 mm, which pair well with the delicate lace weight fiber to create the characteristic openwork effects of lace knitting.
Gauge and Fit Considerations
The pattern notes that gauge is not critically important for this design. Instead, knitters are encouraged to select a yarn and needle combination that accommodates their personal knitting tension—whether loose or tight—while still producing visually appealing lace fabric. This flexible approach makes the pattern more forgiving for knitters still developing consistent tension in their lace work.
Knitting Techniques Used
- Provisional Crochet Cast On: The shawl begins with a provisional crochet cast on method, a technique that allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless construction or special finishing
- Garter Stitch Tab: The foundation of the shawl uses a garter stitch tab, created by knitting 6 rows of garter stitch on 3 stitches, which serves as a structural anchor for the lace sections
- Directional Construction: The pattern employs 90-degree rotations of the work to pick up stitches along garter stitch ridges, a technique that allows the shawl to expand from a small base into a larger triangular or crescent form
Stitches and Lace Elements
The shawl construction incorporates garter stitch as a foundational element, with the main body featuring lace stitches that create the characteristic openwork patterns. These lace elements are what give the shawl its name and visual appeal, with the "dripping" effect likely created through strategic yarn overs and decreases that form flowing lace motifs.
Pattern Overview
Designed by KnittyDebby (Deborah Decker) and originally published in 2012, this pattern represents original design work with traditional influences. The 10-page downloadable PDF format provides detailed instructions suitable for intermediate knitters who have mastered basic knitting skills and are ready to explore the elegant world of lace knitting. The pattern's emphasis on flexibility regarding gauge and personal knitting style makes it an encouraging first lace shawl project for those transitioning from solid stitch patterns to openwork designs.
