What is Being Made

The Driftless Hat is a quick-to-knit beanie designed by Crystal Hiatt, inspired by the natural landscape of Minnesota's Driftless Region. This hat features a simple cable design that evokes the changing bluff landscape, forests, rock formations, and river currents characteristic of the area between the tall bluffs and the mighty Mississippi River. The finished hat is designed to fit a 20-22" circumference, making it a versatile accessory suitable for various head sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly knitting project employs fundamental techniques that make it an excellent choice for those new to hat construction. The pattern utilizes cable knitting as its primary design element, creating visual texture and interest through twisted stitches. The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, which is a standard technique for seamless hat construction. The pattern also incorporates decreasing techniques, specifically knit 2 stitches together (k2tog), to shape the crown and create the fitted top of the hat. Gauge is noted as not critical for this project, which adds to its beginner-friendly nature, though differences in yarn will affect yardage requirements and finished dimensions.

Stitches Used

The Driftless Hat utilizes a limited stitch vocabulary, keeping the pattern accessible for beginners:

• Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch that forms the base fabric
• Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and cable patterns
• Cable stitches – created by slipping stitches onto a cable needle, knitting subsequent stitches, then knitting the slipped stitches, producing the twisted, rope-like design that references the natural landscape
• Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a decrease stitch used to shape the crown of the hat

Materials and Tools

The Driftless Hat is designed for bulky or chunky weight yarn, which contributes to its quick knitting time. The pattern requires approximately 85 yards (77 meters) of yarn. The sample shown was created using Hayfield Chunky with Wool in Muscat, a bulky weight yarn that used 84 yards (77 meters) of the available 158 yards (145 meters) in the sample skein.

The following needles and tools are required:

• US 9 circular needle, 16" length – for initial cast-on and ribbing
• US 10 circular needle, 16" length – for the main body of the hat
• US 10 double-pointed needles (DPNs) – for working the crown decreases when the circumference becomes too small for circular needles
• Cable needle (CN) – for holding stitches while creating cable twists
• Stitch marker (m) – for marking the beginning of rounds
• Tape measure – for measuring finished dimensions and gauge
