The dragon is made first. Then the back ground is added on just around just the wings. Then the head, tail, and legs are sewn to the background. Yarn choices. The first dragon shawl I made I used a variegated yarn with short color changes for both the dragon and the background. The dragon's features blended in and you couldn't see them It showed up clearly in white. But one tester used purple, and she wasn't pleased with how well you could see the dragon.
