Product Description
After hunting for a Dragon Scarf pattern, but not finding one that fitted with the idea I had in my head, I decided to make my own. Eventually this fiery chap emerged from my ball of wool.
You could use any weight of wool for this pattern, however any changes would affect the length, width, and overall size, of the finished piece. When made with chunky wool it will fit an adult, but the length can easily be worked to fit a child.
If you come across any errors, or anything which is unclear, or could be improved please do let me know.

Dragon Scarf by Seolta Hooker
What is Being Made
The Dragon Scarf is a creative crochet project that combines functional scarf-wearing with sculptural amigurumi-style dragon construction. This original pattern, designed by Seolta Hooker, creates a wearable dragon figure that emerges from chunky yarn. The scarf features a dragon body with safety eyes and stuffed construction, making it both a practical accessory and a decorative statement piece. The designer created this pattern after searching unsuccessfully for an existing dragon scarf design that matched her vision, resulting in her first-ever published crochet pattern.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
The Dragon Scarf employs fundamental amigurumi techniques combined with scarf construction methods. The project uses stuffed crochet to create dimensional shaping, allowing the dragon body to maintain its three-dimensional form. The pattern incorporates safety eye insertion for creating the dragon's facial features, which requires careful placement and securing during assembly. The construction involves seaming and sewing components together using a tapestry needle, integrating the dragon elements into the wearable scarf structure. The pattern is written in UK crochet terminology, which uses different abbreviation conventions than US patterns.
Stitches Used
The Dragon Scarf pattern utilizes essential crochet stitches to build its structure:
- Chain (ch) - the foundation stitch for starting rows and creating openings
- Double crochet (dc) - a short, tight stitch used for dense fabric construction
- Half treble (htr) - a medium-height stitch providing varied texture
- Treble (tr) - a taller stitch creating lighter, more open sections
- Slip stitch (ss) - used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Decrease (dec) - essential for shaping the dragon body and creating contoured sections
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Dragon Scarf pattern calls for chunky weight yarn, specifically James C. Brett Lakeland Chunky in Colour K6. The designer used 4 balls of 100g yarn total, though actual yarn consumption varies depending on the desired length of the dragon body; the designer's finished version used 3 balls for the body section. A 6mm crochet hook is required, appropriately sized for chunky yarn work. Additional materials include 2 dragon safety eyes measuring 18mm for the facial features, fiberfill stuffing for creating dimension and structure, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming components together.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it uses basic crochet stitches, the project requires competence in multiple techniques including amigurumi construction, stuffing and shaping, safety eye insertion, and assembly. The combination of these skills, along with following the designer's first-ever published pattern, makes it suitable for crocheters with some foundational experience rather than complete beginners.
