Dragon Cabled Gauntlets by Vanessa Ewing

Project Overview

The Dragon Cabled Gauntlets are knitted arm warmers designed to extend coverage beyond the wrist, making them an ideal accessory for layering with short-sleeved jackets. These intermediate-level gauntlets feature a dragon-inspired cable pattern and are sized to fit adult arms measuring 11 inches in length with a 6½-inch circumference when unstretched.

What Is Being Made

These are knitted gauntlets—fingerless gloves or arm warmers that cover the hand and extend up the forearm. The gauntlets are constructed to provide warmth while allowing full finger mobility, making them practical for activities requiring hand dexterity. The dragon-themed cable work serves as the primary decorative element throughout the piece.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Cable knitting: The defining technique of this pattern, using cable stitches to create raised, twisted rope-like textures that form the dragon design
  • Double-pointed needle (dpn) construction: The gauntlets are worked in the round using a set of four or five double-pointed needles, allowing for seamless cylindrical shaping
  • Stockinette stitch: The base stitch used for gauge measurement and likely for background areas between cable elements
  • Stitch marker placement: Used to track pattern repeats and maintain stitch counts throughout the circular knitting
  • Bind-off finishing: The pattern includes a bind-off technique to secure and finish the edges

Stitches Featured

  • C8B (Cable 8 Back): Slip 4 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the back of the work, knit the next 4 stitches from the left-hand needle, then knit the stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the back
  • C8F (Cable 8 Front): Slip 4 stitches onto a cable needle and hold at the front of the work, knit the next 4 stitches from the left-hand needle, then knit the stitches from the cable needle. This creates a cable that twists to the front
  • Stockinette stitch: The fundamental stitch providing the smooth base fabric and used as the foundation for gauge calculations

Materials and Tools Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for 231 yards of light worsted or DK weight yarn. The sample gauntlets were created using Cape May Fiber DK Merino Superwash, which is 100% Superwash Merino Wool in the colorway Red Cottage. This yardage is sufficient for the complete pair of gauntlets.

Needles and Notions: Knitters will need US Size 7 (4.5mm) double-pointed knitting needles in a set of 4 or 5, depending on preferred circular knitting method. Additional supplies include 2 stitch markers for tracking pattern progression and a cable needle for executing the cable stitches that form the dragon design.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch on US 7 (4.5mm) needles. Achieving proper gauge is emphasized as essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. The gauntlets are sized for adult wearers with an 11-inch length and 6½-inch unstretched circumference.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern is suitable for knitters with experience beyond basic techniques. The cable work requires familiarity with cable stitches and the use of a cable needle, while the circular knitting on double-pointed needles demands comfort with that construction method. Knitters new to cables should expect a moderate learning curve, though the repetitive nature of cable patterns makes them rewarding once the technique is established.
