Product Description
I love a good contrasting sock heel. I love to work my socks toe up and top down- depending on my mood. I love garter and stockinette stitch. These socks are designed to cater to all the sock variations using a short row heel. You will find directions for both toe up and top down versions in a shortie sock, which will make the most of your sock yarn scraps. You will also find two heels, garter and stockinette, using German Short Rows in an unusual configuration.

Double Scoop Socks by Julia Swart
What Is Being Made
Double Scoop Socks are a versatile sock design created by independent designer Julia Swart. These are shortie socks designed to maximize the use of sock yarn scraps and leftover yardage. The pattern offers multiple construction methods and heel options, making it an adaptable project for knitters who want flexibility in their sock-making approach.
Construction Methods and Variations
The Double Scoop Socks pattern accommodates different knitting preferences by providing both toe-up and top-down construction directions. This flexibility allows knitters to choose their preferred method based on mood and yarn availability. The pattern is specifically written for the magic loop technique using long circular needles, though double-pointed needles are also suitable.
Heel Techniques
The design features two distinct heel options, both constructed using German Short Rows in an unusual configuration. This advanced short-row technique creates a well-fitted heel cup with minimal bulk. Knitters can choose between two stitch patterns for their heel:
- Garter stitch heel for a textured, elastic finish
- Stockinette stitch heel for a smooth, traditional appearance
Stitches Used
The Double Scoop Socks pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches suitable for sock construction:
- Stockinette stitch for the primary sock body, creating a smooth, classic fabric
- Garter stitch as an alternative for textural contrast, particularly in the heel options
These stitch combinations provide both visual interest and functional durability in a wearable garment.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Double Scoop Socks pattern is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply sock yarn weights, making it ideal for standard sock yarn. The pattern requires approximately 50 grams of superwash sock yarn plus a 20-gram mini-skein for cuffs, heels, and toes. This modest yardage requirement makes the design perfect for using up yarn scraps.
The sample shown uses Plymouth Happy Feet 100 Splash in Tuscan Spice, which contains 90% superwash merino wool and 10% nylon, providing durability and easy care. The superwash treatment makes these socks machine-washable and practical for everyday wear.
Tools and Gauge
The pattern calls for US 2 (2.75mm) double-pointed or long circular needles, with needle size adjusted as needed to achieve proper gauge. A tapestry needle is required for finishing and weaving in ends. The recommended gauge is 32 stitches over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch.
Sizing
Double Scoop Socks are available in five sizes, ranging from 56 to 72 stitches, accommodating various foot circumferences and ensuring a customizable fit.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as beginner-friendly, making it accessible to knitters new to sock construction while offering enough variation and technique exploration to interest more experienced crafters. The straightforward construction combined with detailed directions for multiple methods supports knitters at various experience levels.
