The pattern contains one basic head shape with 8 different colour-work treatments and this combined with 7 different styles of ear, also options for the colour patch design of the body, arms and legs and a few different tail options, gives you a lot of options to make different breeds of dogs.
Included are instructions to make 2 sweaters, one is in stranded colour-work and the other knitted in a single colour with a textured design.
All pieces of the dog are knitted flat with worsted weight yarn on 3mm needles and all pieces are seamed afterwards.
Clothing is knitted from 4ply/fingering weight yarn on 2.75mm needles. The sweater is knitted flat in pieces with the sleeves picked up from the armhole edges of the front and back, and seamed afterwards - with an option to knit the collar in the round. The shorts are worked flat and then seamed.
This downloadable knitting pattern creates an adorable stuffed toy dog complete with a custom-fitted sweater and shorts. Designed by Julie Williams, the finished dog measures approximately 23cm (9 inches) from the tip of the toes to the top of the head, making it an ideal size for a decorative toy or gift. The pattern combines multiple yarn weights and colors to create distinct sections: the dog's body, sweater, and coordinating shorts.
The project consists of three main components:
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for crafters with some experience. The pattern uses standard knit and purl stitches to construct the three-dimensional toy body through shaping and increases and decreases. Colorwork is incorporated to create visual definition between the dog's body sections and facial features. The pattern requires basic finishing techniques including seaming pieces together, weaving in yarn ends with a tapestry needle, and attaching embellishments for the eyes and facial details.
The pattern calls for multiple yarn weights to achieve different effects:
Achieving proper gauge is important for this project's finished size. The dog body is worked at a gauge of 6 stitches by 9 rows over 1 inch (2.5cm). The clothing pieces are worked at a gauge of 7 stitches (specific row gauge not provided in the materials section). Working at the correct gauge ensures the sweater and shorts fit properly on the completed toy dog.
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and simple shaping but are ready to tackle projects with multiple components, color changes, and finishing details. The combination of toy construction, garment fitting, and embellishment work provides a rewarding challenge for developing knitters.
