Product Description
Knit a squadron of Dinky Planes and suspend on lengths of yarn to make a baby crib mobile. To make each dinky plane you will need less than 25 grammes of yarn and a large handful of toy filling. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, these planes are knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish. Each plane is 8cm long.
Dinky Planes Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry
What is Being Made
Dinky Planes is a downloadable knitting pattern designed to create a collection of small toy aircraft. The pattern enables crafters to knit a squadron of planes that can be suspended on lengths of yarn to assemble into a decorative baby crib mobile. Each individual plane requires less than 25 grammes of yarn to complete, making this an economical project for creating multiple coordinated pieces.
Craft and Construction Method
This is an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters with foundational knitting skills. All pieces are worked flat using the back-and-forth method on a pair of 4mm single-pointed knitting needles, rather than working in the round. This flat construction approach simplifies the shaping and assembly of the plane components.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques and stitches:
- Stockinette stitch (also known as stocking stitch): The primary stitch structure created by purling wrong-side rows and knitting right-side rows to produce a smooth, classic fabric finish
- Knitted cast on: The standard cast-on method used to begin the pieces unless otherwise specified in the pattern instructions
- Knit two stitches together (k2tog): A decrease technique that reduces stitch count by one
- Knit into front and back (kfb): An increase technique that adds one stitch by working into both the front and back loops of a single stitch
- Pull through cast off: A finishing technique where yarn is cut leaving a 30cm tail, threaded onto a darning needle, sewn through remaining stitches, and gathered tightly to secure and complete the piece
Materials Required
Each plane requires DK weight yarn (less than 25 grammes per plane), 4mm single-pointed knitting needles, and a large handful of toy filling for stuffing the completed aircraft. A darning needle is also needed for the cast-off technique and finishing work.
