What is Being Made

The Dilly Cowl is a one-size knitted cowl designed by Kari-Helene Rane. This finished piece measures 55 cm in circumference and 30 cm in depth, making it a versatile neckwear accessory suitable for layering and everyday wear. The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, creating a seamless tubular construction.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The cowl begins with a loose cast-on worked on 4 mm needles, then transitions to 5 mm needles to create subtle shaping and drape. The pattern incorporates yarn overs and decreases to form decorative lace elements throughout the design. Stocking stitch forms the primary fabric base, providing a smooth, refined finish. The pattern uses in-the-round knitting on a 60 cm circular needle, eliminating the need for seaming. Tension control is essential, with the designer recommending light steaming of the swatch to achieve accurate measurements before beginning the main piece.

Materials

The Dilly Cowl is knitted using Purl Alpaca Fine yarn, a luxurious 100% alpaca fiber available in DK and sport weights. The project requires three 50-gram balls, providing approximately 348 meters of yarn (116 meters per ball). The photographed sample is worked in the shade 'Alpaca Light'. Knitting needles required include both 4 mm and 5 mm circular needles measuring 60 cm in length. Needle size adjustments may be necessary to achieve the correct tension of 20 stitches and 29 rows over a 10 cm square in stocking stitch.
