Product Description
The Diamonds & Twists Cabled Beanie was designed for the Furls Blog Hop 2020. I chose Whims Merino DK for my design as this weight was perfect for a more detailed cable stitch pattern.
Yarn
Whims Merino DK Yarn is a 50% superwash merino / 50% nylon yarn. Because of the nylon content and stretch of the yarn, this hat is written in one size only.
Hat is an A Crocheted Simplicity original design.
All of my patterns are written in standard American terms, unless noted otherwise.

Diamonds & Twists Cabled Beanie by Jennifer Renaud
What Is Being Made
The Diamonds & Twists Cabled Beanie is a crocheted hat designed by Jennifer Renaud for teens and adults. This one-size-fits-most beanie features a circumference range of 20-1/2" to 23-1/2", making it suitable for a wide range of head sizes. The design combines textured cable elements with diamond motifs to create visual interest and dimension.
Craft and Technique Overview
This project is created using crochet techniques at an intermediate skill level. The beanie employs post stitches and decreases to achieve its distinctive textured appearance, requiring familiarity with more advanced crochet methods beyond basic single and double crochet.
Stitches Used
- Extended Single Crochet (ext sc): Forms the foundation fabric with a gauge of 20.5 stitches over 4 inches and 7 rows over 1.5 inches
- Single Crochet (sc): Basic stitch used throughout the construction
- Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Creates the cable texture by working around post stitches from previous rows
- Front Post Treble Crochet (fptr): Adds height and dimension to cable sections
- Extended Single Crochet Decrease (extsc2tog): Reduces stitches while maintaining the extended single crochet texture
- Front Post Double Crochet Decrease by 1 (fpdc2tog): Decreases cable stitches for shaping
- Front Post Double Crochet Decrease by 2 (fpdc3tog): Creates more significant decreases in cable sections
- Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and finishing
- Chain (ch): Foundation stitches for starting the project
Materials Required
Yarn: DK weight yarn (category 3) totaling approximately 350 yards. The sample was created using Furls Whims Merino in Light Grey, a blend of 50% superwash merino and 50% nylon. Any comparable DK weight yarn may be substituted provided the specified gauge is achieved.
Crochet Hooks: Two hook sizes are needed—an H/8/5.00mm hook and a G/6/4.00mm hook. The pattern notes that crocheters who work on the looser side may need to go down one or two hook sizes to meet the required gauge, while those who crochet tightly should follow the specified sizes.
Additional Supplies: A yarn needle for weaving in ends and a scrap piece of yarn to use as a stitch marker for tracking pattern repeats.
Pattern Characteristics
The beanie is worked in extended single crochet as the primary stitch base, providing a dense, structured fabric. The cable and diamond details are created through strategic placement of front post stitches, which wrap around posts from previous rows to create raised, twisted textures. This intermediate-level design requires understanding of post stitch techniques and multiple decrease methods to shape the crown properly.
