Diamonds on Moss Tam by Helen Silva
What Is Being Made
The Diamonds on Moss Tam is a stylish beret-style tam hat designed by Helen L. Silva as part of "The Diamonds on Moss Suite." This one-size-fits-most hat features a distinctive cabled diamond pattern set against a moss stitch background. The tam is designed to sit on the head with a jaunty side dip, creating a flattering and fashionable silhouette. With an unstretched band circumference of approximately 18 inches, the hat can be adjusted for individual fit preferences.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project is worked in one piece using the circular knitting method or double-pointed needles, eliminating the need for seaming. The construction technique allows for seamless integration of the cabled diamond motif with the moss stitch background throughout the crown and body of the hat. The tam requires approximately 160 to 200 yards of yarn to complete, including the optional pom pom embellishment. The sample version was knit using Araucania Hurasco Worsted and consumed 180 yards total.
Stitches Used
- Moss Stitch: A textured background stitch that creates visual depth and interest
- Cabled Diamond Pattern: A decorative cable motif that forms diamond shapes across the hat's surface
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Diamonds on Moss Tam is designed to work with either DK weight or light worsted weight yarn. The pattern accommodates flexibility in yarn choice while maintaining the intended drape and fit of the finished hat. Circular needles or double-pointed needles in the appropriate size for your selected yarn weight are required for construction. The sample was successfully created using Araucania Hurasco Worsted, demonstrating the pattern's compatibility with quality worsted-weight fibers.
Design Collection Context
The Diamonds on Moss Tam is part of a coordinated collection by Helen L. Silva that includes companion pieces: the Diamonds on Moss Cowl and the Diamonds on Moss Fingerless Mitts. This allows knitters to create a cohesive set of accessories featuring the same distinctive diamond and moss stitch design elements.
