DETAILS

Diamonds upon diamonds! If it’s too cold to wear em’, we’ll still find a way to show them off, and this cowl does just that. The Diamond Stitch Cowl is perfect for any fall or blustery winter day. Cozy and snuggly to keep you toasty warm , and thick and sturdy enough to stay upright to protect your neck, while not being constricting. This design was made as a collaboration with my wonderful friend Whitney from Songbyrdy with her colorway “Angel Aura”- pairing the two gemstones together for a perfect match.

DIFFICULTY Advanced Beginner - You will need to know how to cast on, knit stitch, purl stitch, slip stitches, work in the round, bind off.

Diamond Stitch Cowl by Knitatude - Chantal

Project Overview

The Diamond Stitch Cowl is a knitted neck accessory designed to showcase a striking diamond pattern through strategic stitch placement and yarn manipulation. This cowl combines visual interest with functional warmth, making it an ideal project for fall and winter wear. The finished piece measures 17.5 inches in height and 12 inches in width when laid flat, creating a substantial cowl that stands upright around the neck without constricting.

What Is Being Made

A circular cowl featuring a repeating diamond stitch pattern that creates a visually striking geometric design. The cowl is constructed in the round using seamless knitting techniques, resulting in a continuous tube of fabric that provides neck warmth and protection. The design emphasizes the diamond motif throughout, allowing the pattern to be displayed prominently from all angles. This cowl is substantial enough to provide structural support while remaining comfortable for extended wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Circular knitting: The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating a seamless, professional finish
  • Slip stitches: Slip stitches are employed to create the diamond pattern without adding bulk, using the technique of slipping stitches with yarn in front (WYIF)
  • Stockinette stitch base: The foundational stitch structure is worked in stockinette stitch, providing a smooth, classic fabric surface that allows the diamond pattern to stand out
  • Yarn manipulation: Strategic placement of yarn and slip stitches creates the dimensional diamond effect across the cowl surface

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): The primary stitch creating the stockinette base fabric
  • Slip 5 stitches with yarn in front (SL5wyif): Used to create the diamond pattern by slipping multiple stitches while holding yarn in front, creating visual texture and pattern definition
  • Stockinette stitch: Alternating knit and purl rows (or rounds when working circularly) that create the smooth fabric base

Materials and Tools

Yarn: 207 meters (228 yards) of super bulky weight yarn, category 6. The substantial yardage combined with the super bulky weight creates a thick, cozy fabric that provides excellent insulation and helps the cowl maintain its upright structure.

Needles and Notions: US size 11 (8mm) circular needles measuring 24 inches (60 cm) in length, which is appropriate for working a cowl in the round. The project also requires one stitch marker to track the beginning of rounds, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and scissors for finishing.

Gauge and Sizing

The gauge is established at 11 stitches and 17 rows over 4 inches when working stockinette stitch on 8mm needles. Maintaining accurate gauge is essential for achieving the finished dimensions of 17.5 inches in height and 12 inches in width when laid flat, ensuring the cowl fits properly and the diamond pattern displays at the intended scale.

Skill Level Considerations

While listed as intermediate difficulty, this project requires comfort with circular knitting and understanding how slip stitches create pattern. Knitters should be familiar with working in the round, managing stitches on circular needles, and reading basic knitting abbreviations. The slip stitch technique used for the diamond pattern adds visual complexity but is achievable for knitters with foundational skills.

Design Inspiration

The Diamond Stitch Cowl was created as a collaboration featuring the colorway "Angel Aura," pairing gemstone-inspired aesthetics with the diamond stitch pattern for a cohesive, elegant design. The pattern celebrates the diamond motif throughout, making this cowl a statement piece suitable for showcasing beautiful, coordinating yarn colors.
