Desert Sunrise Cowl by Ann Iverson

Project Overview

The Desert Sunrise Cowl is an intermediate-level knitted cowl designed by Ann Iverson for Vibrant Viking. This project features a collaboration with Blue Mule Fiber and showcases stranded colorwork techniques throughout the design. The cowl combines warm desert-inspired hues with luxurious yarn qualities, making it both visually striking and exceptionally soft to wear.

What Is Being Made

This is a knitted neck cowl—a circular, tubular garment worn around the neck and shoulders for warmth and style. The Desert Sunrise Cowl features multiple color changes that create a cohesive design inspired by desert sunrise imagery. The finished piece is worked in the round on circular needles, creating a seamless construction.

Techniques Used

  • Stranded Colorwork: The primary technique throughout this cowl involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rows to create the patterned design. Stranded colorwork, also called Fair Isle knitting, allows knitters to work with two or more colors in a single row while maintaining consistent tension and fabric integrity.
  • Ribbing: The cowl incorporates ribbed sections, likely at the edges, which provide elasticity and help the garment maintain its shape around the neck.
  • Circular Knitting: Worked in the round on circular needles to create a seamless, tubular construction.

Stitches Used

While the complete stitch pattern is not fully detailed in the available information, the cowl employs stockinette stitch as the base fabric combined with stranded colorwork motifs. The ribbing sections use knit and purl stitches in alternation to create the characteristic textured edge.

Materials and Yarn

Yarn Fiber: Blue Mule Fiber Xtra Fine in Finger/Sock Weight, a premium blend of 75% Extra Fine Superwash Merino Wool and 25% Mulberry Silk. This combination provides exceptional softness, a subtle sheen, and easy-care properties through the superwash treatment.

Yardage Requirements: The project requires approximately 438 yards total from a 100-gram skein, distributed across four colors:

  • Main Color (MC): Belle Starr (Orange) — 230 yards
  • Contrast Color 1 (CC1): Charles Goodnight (Blue) — 35 yards
  • Contrast Color 2 (CC2): Annie Oakley (Yellow) — 33 yards
  • Contrast Color 3 (CC3): Calamity Jane (Turquoise) — 36 yards

Needles: US Size 5 (3.75mm) circular needles, 16 inches in length, are used for both the ribbing and body of the cowl. Circular needles accommodate the in-the-round construction and allow for even stitch distribution.

Additional Notions: Stitch markers and a tapestry needle are required for pattern work and finishing.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 28 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the cowl to fit correctly and display the colorwork pattern as intended.

Yarn Characteristics

The Blue Mule Fiber yarn selected for this project offers a luxurious hand feel and visual appeal. The combination of Extra Fine Superwash Merino and Mulberry Silk creates a fabric with natural sheen and exceptional softness, making this cowl a pleasure to wear against the skin. The superwash treatment ensures the finished garment can be easily laundered without felting concerns.
