Product Description
These cozy cuffs and mittens were designed as companion pieces to the Amor Delira hat, inspired by the YA novel “Delirium” by Lauren Oliver. Cabled ribbing transitions into a wavey lace pattern on the back of the mittens (palm is worked in stockinette) and all around the cuffs, making for a challenging knit that's perfect for any occasion. The cuffs are worked with two needle sizes to emphasize the flare of the lace, while the mittens are worked at a tighter gauge for greater warmth. Stitch patterns are given in chart form only. Mitten sample was worked in Kettle Yarn Co Lomond Aran in "Ginger". Cuff sample was worked in Storied Yarn Bo Peep Worsted in "Waiting for Something to Happen".
Skills needed: knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, cabling and lace knitting. Gauge: for cuffs, 19 sts/27 rows over 4 in/10 cm in pattern with larger needles. For mittens, 21 sts/26 rows over 4 in/10 cm in pattern with smaller needles.
A suggested substitute yarn is shown below.
Deliria Nervosa Cuffs and Mittens by Rachel Brown
Project Overview
Deliria Nervosa is an advanced knitting pattern for a coordinated set of cuffs and mittens designed by Rachel C. Brown. These companion pieces were inspired by the YA novel "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver and are meant to coordinate with the Amor Delira hat. The design combines structural cable work with delicate lace elements, creating a sophisticated accessory set suitable for experienced knitters seeking a challenging project.
What Is Being Made
This pattern includes two distinct garments: a pair of fitted cuffs and a pair of mittens. The cuffs feature a flared design that transitions from ribbed cabling at the base to an all-over wavey lace pattern. The mittens showcase a mixed-stitch construction with lace patterning on the back of the hand while the palm remains in smooth stockinette stitch for practicality and comfort. Both pieces are designed to work as companion accessories that complement each other visually and functionally.
Sizing and Fit
- Cuffs: Available in Small/Medium and Medium/Large sizes. Wrist circumference measures approximately 6 inches (15.25 cm) and 7.25 inches (18.5 cm) unstretched, with final cuff circumference of approximately 10 inches (25.5 cm) and 11.75 inches (29.75 cm) respectively.
- Mittens: Sized to coordinate with the cuff sizing options.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced pattern requires proficiency in multiple knitting techniques. Knitters must be comfortable with fundamental skills including knitting and purling, as well as shaping techniques such as increases and decreases. The pattern heavily features cable knitting, with specific cable crosses such as the 2/2 RC (two over two right cross), which involves slipping two stitches to a cable needle, holding it in back, knitting two stitches from the left needle, then knitting two stitches from the cable needle. Lace knitting is a central design element, particularly on the back of the mittens and throughout the cuff circumference, requiring careful attention to yarn-overs and decreases to create the wavey lace pattern.
Construction and Gauge Considerations
The cuffs are worked using two different needle sizes to emphasize and showcase the flare created by the lace pattern. This technique-driven approach requires the knitter to switch needle sizes at a specific point in the pattern to achieve the intended shaping. The mittens are worked at a tighter gauge than the cuffs to provide greater warmth and durability, making them practical for winter wear while maintaining the aesthetic design elements. The mixed-stitch approach on the mittens, combining lace on the back with stockinette on the palm, balances visual interest with functional comfort.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for aran-weight yarn, which provides sufficient stitch definition for both the cable work and lace elements. The use of two needle sizes for the cuffs means knitters will need to have multiple needle sizes on hand. The specific needle sizes and yardage requirements are detailed within the pattern instructions.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced, making it suitable for experienced knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle complex stitch patterns and multi-technique projects. The combination of cabling, lace work, and gauge adjustments requires strong foundational skills and the ability to read and follow detailed pattern instructions.
