Das Waldhaus Toe Up Socks by Atalante
What is Being Made
Das Waldhaus is a pair of women's socks inspired by the classic fairy tale "Das Waldhaus" (The Hut in the Forest). The design features a toe-up construction method, allowing knitters to start from the toes and work toward the cuff. This sock pattern is available in three finished sizes: Women's S, M, and L, making it adaptable for various foot dimensions.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs the magic loop method as its primary construction technique. The magic loop method uses a single circular needle to work small circumferences in the round, with Needle 1 designated for the instep and Needle 2 for the sole. For knitters who prefer traditional methods, the pattern accommodates double-pointed needles (dpns) by dividing stitches across four dpns.
The toe-up approach is a popular sock knitting method that begins with a small number of stitches at the toe and increases gradually, providing excellent fit customization and the ability to knit until yarn runs out. This technique requires careful attention to shaping increases and transitions between sections.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
Das Waldhaus is worked primarily in stockinette stitch, the foundational fabric for most sock patterns. Stockinette creates a smooth, classic appearance ideal for showcasing yarn color and texture. The pattern also incorporates cable stitches, as indicated by the inclusion of a cable needle in the materials list, adding visual interest and structural definition to the sock design.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The recommended yarn for Das Waldhaus is Regia 4 ply, a fingering weight sock yarn composed of 75% wool and 25% polyamide. This fiber blend provides durability and elasticity essential for socks, with the polyamide content increasing longevity through repeated wear and washing. One skein of the main color (MC) is required, which contains 210 meters per 50g ball.
The pattern calls for three contrasting colors (CC 1-3) to represent the three sisters from the fairy tale. Each contrast color requires 20 grams of yarn, equivalent to approximately 85 meters or 92 yards, allowing for creative color blocking or decorative elements throughout the sock.
Knitting needles specified are US 1 1/2 (2.5mm) circular needles, sized appropriately for fingering weight yarn and the 36 stitch by 46 row gauge achieved in stockinette stitch over a 10-centimeter (4-inch) square. A tapestry needle is essential for weaving in ends and finishing the completed socks.
Pattern Narrative and Design Inspiration
Das Waldhaus draws thematic inspiration from the Brothers Grimm fairy tale in which three sisters are sent to help their father. The youngest sister, who shows kindness to animals and people she encounters, ultimately receives the greatest reward—marriage to a prince. This narrative richness transforms the sock from a purely functional garment into a wearable story, with the three contrast colors representing the three sisters and their distinct character arcs.
