Product Description

Darwinian is an asymmetrical triangle worked sideways with a body of garter edged by a wide band of beautifully textured lace, and a twisting cable edge.

Ideal for showing off a mottled or gently variegated yarn, or a lovely dappled gradient such as a cake of Gobsmacked.

Adaptable to any yardage of fingering to worsted, by adjusting needle size to suit your preferred gauge.

Can be worked entirely from written pattern, or from chart with some notes.

The name was inspired by a slight resemblance to DNA strands in both the lace and cable edge, and by the name of the colourway used in the sample, 'Darwin learns Portuguese'.

Darwinian Knitted Shawl by Nim Teasdale

What Is Being Made

Darwinian is an asymmetrical triangle shawl designed by independent designer Nim Teasdale. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a sophisticated wrap featuring a garter stitch body bordered by a wide band of textured lace and a distinctive twisting cable edge. The finished shawl measures 150x56cm (59x22 inches) when blocked, making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Design Inspiration and Features

The shawl's name draws inspiration from its visual resemblance to DNA strands, visible in the intricate lace and cable detailing along the edges. The asymmetrical triangle construction is worked sideways, creating a dynamic silhouette. This design is particularly effective for showcasing mottled or gently variegated yarns, as well as dappled gradient colorways such as the Gobsmacked colorway pictured in the pattern.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Garter stitch forms the main body of the shawl, providing a classic, reversible texture
  • Lace knitting creates the wide decorative band edging the garter stitch body with beautifully textured openwork
  • Cable knitting forms the twisting edge detail that frames the entire shawl
  • Sideways construction allows the shawl to be worked from one side to the other, building the asymmetrical triangle shape progressively
  • Beading is offered as an optional embellishment, with beads placed on knit stitches between yarn overs in the lace bands for added visual interest

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches combined into more complex stitch patterns. Key stitches include knit stitches, yarn overs for lace creation, and cable crosses for the twisted edge detail. The lace band utilizes yarn overs paired with decreases to create the textured openwork characteristic of lace knitting, while the cable edge employs twisting techniques to produce dimensional, rope-like detailing.

Yarn and Materials

Darwinian is highly adaptable and can be worked in any yarn weight, from fingering to worsted weight. The pictured sample uses 440 meters (480 yards) of Gobsmacked yarn in a four-quarter skein. The pattern is worked on 3.5mm (US size 4) needles, though needle size should be adjusted based on your chosen yarn weight and desired gauge. Yarn weight flexibility allows knitters to customize the finished size and drape of their shawl by adjusting needle size to achieve their preferred gauge.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, suitable for knitters with experience in basic stitches who are ready to tackle lace and cable techniques. The combination of garter stitch simplicity with lace and cable complexity creates an engaging project that develops advanced skills while remaining accessible to experienced knitters.

Pattern Customization

Darwinian's adaptable construction allows for significant customization. Knitters can use any yardage amount by adjusting needle size to suit their preferred gauge, making the pattern flexible for yarn stash usage. The design works beautifully with solid-colored yarns, but truly shines when worked in mottled, variegated, or gradient colorways that showcase the interplay between the garter stitch body and the textured lace and cable edges.
