Product Description

Darolyn hat combines simple colour work with colour blocking suitable for using small quantities of yarn. A great design for all the family.

Worked from either crown to band or band to crown, instructions are provided separately, ie: you will not need to print all 6 pages.

Choose colours with good contrast for a bold hat or complementary colours for a subtle look.

Pattern has full written instructions and colour work charts.

Three colours are required, though three complete balls will yield a number of hats.

Pattern is great for using scraps or single balls as not more than 100m/110y required of any colour.

The small amount of colour work makes it perfect as an introduction to stranded work.

Difficulty - Intermediate to account for the stranded colour work design and colour blocking.

Darolyn Hat by Tracey Lee

What is Being Made

The Darolyn hat is a versatile beanie-style hat designed by Tracey Lee, suitable for the entire family across five sizes. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a fitted hat with a beanie length that ranges from 15.25cm to 25cm depending on the chosen size. The finished circumference options span from 40.5cm for extra small to 61cm for extra large, with the design featuring enough stretch to accommodate an additional 2-5cm of give for comfortable wear.

Techniques and Construction

The Darolyn hat is worked in the round, meaning the knitter creates the hat as a continuous tube rather than flat pieces that require seaming. This seamless construction method is ideal for creating a comfortable, stretchy beanie. The pattern incorporates colour work and colour blocking techniques, allowing crafters to create visual interest through strategic yarn colour changes. The hat begins at the crown and is worked downward in rounds until reaching the banded edge, with a stitch marker placed at the beginning of each round to track progress through the circular knitting.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit (K) – the primary stitch used throughout most of the hat
  • Purl (P) – used selectively within the pattern
  • Knit into front and back (Kfb) – an increase stitch that creates two stitches from one, used to shape the hat
  • Right lifted increase (RLI) – an alternative increase method that lifts the stitch below the next stitch to be knit before knitting the next stitch on the needle
  • Stocking stitch – the primary fabric texture, created by alternating knit and purl rows (or rounds in this case)

The pattern uses colour work abbreviations including CA (colour A), CB (colour B), and CC (colour C) to denote when to change yarn colours during construction.

Materials and Specifications

The Darolyn hat is designed for DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits to a gauge of 22 stitches and 26 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch. This pattern is particularly suited for knitters who wish to use small quantities of yarn, making it an excellent project for utilizing leftover yarn from previous projects or creating a multi-coloured design through colour blocking and colour work. Standard knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn and a stitch marker are required to complete this project.

Size Range

Available in five sizes with the following approximate finished circumferences:

  • XS: 40.5cm (16 inches)
  • S: 46cm (18 inches)
  • M: 50cm (20 inches)
  • L: 56cm (22 inches)
  • XL: 61cm (24 inches)

Size-specific instructions are clearly marked within the pattern using bracket notation [XS] [S] [M] [L] [XL] wherever measurements or stitch counts differ between sizes.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Darolyn hat assumes knitters have foundational skills in knitting in the round and are comfortable with basic increase techniques. The colour work and colour blocking elements add visual complexity while remaining accessible to knitters progressing beyond beginner projects.
