What is Being Made

Danni's Gloves are a pair of knitted fingerless or full-length gloves inspired by Game of Thrones, specifically designed to evoke the appearance of dragon scales reminiscent of Daenerys Targaryen's dragons. These intermediate-level knitting gloves feature a distinctive stitch pattern that creates a textured, scaled appearance throughout the design.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project is created using the knitting craft. The gloves are worked in the round using the traditional method of circular knitting with double-pointed needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous stitch work. This technique is ideal for creating fitted garments like gloves that require shaping around the hand and fingers.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used

The gloves incorporate several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

• Knit stitch (k) – the primary stitch forming the fabric base
• Purl stitch (p) – used in the ribbed cuff and as part of the textured pattern
• Ribbing (k1,p1) – creates the elastic cuff that helps the gloves stay in place on the wrist
• Chart-based stitch pattern – a repeating 12-row pattern that creates the dragon scale texture, worked twice around each round for visual impact
• Thumb gusset shaping – increases worked strategically to accommodate the thumb and provide proper fit

Materials and Tools

Yarn: One skein of Smooshy with Cashmere in sock weight by Dream in Color (sample shown in the colorway Go Go Grassy). Sock weight yarn is ideal for gloves as it provides durability and a refined drape suitable for fitted hand wear.

Needles: A set of five double-pointed needles in size 3.25mm. The five-needle set allows for even distribution of stitches and smooth, seamless knitting in the round.

Gauge and Sizing

The recommended gauge for this project is 7 stitches and 10 rows per 1 inch, worked in the stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the gloves fit correctly around the hand and wrist.

Construction Overview

The gloves begin with a 52-stitch cast-on for the left glove. The cuff is worked with a knit-one, purl-one ribbed pattern for 3 rounds, followed by a purl round that creates a subtle design detail. Stitches are distributed across four needles (13 stitches per needle) with a marker placed to denote the end of each round. The main dragon-scale stitch pattern is then worked from a chart, repeated twice per round for a total of two complete pattern repeats. Following the pattern rounds, a thumb gusset is introduced through strategic increases, allowing the glove to accommodate the thumb while maintaining the overall fitted shape. This intermediate-level project requires familiarity with reading stitch charts, working in the round, and executing basic shaping techniques.
