Daniel the Spaniel is a very obedient and lovable hound! He comes fully house trained and promises not to sleep on your bed (unless you let him!). An easy to follow, delightful pattern for your very own Daniel the Spaniel. The pattern contains over 30 pictures to help you along the way. I have also included a little tutorial on how to knit the loop stitch (for his spaniel-esque ears) and how to gather a cast on seam if these techniques are not familiar to you. If you get stuck with the loop knitting then I have included an alternative instruction to knit a non-fluffy ear using garter stitch (all knit) instead. There is a small amount of intarsia but nothing that should get you worked up into a frantic knitting frenzy! Again, if you prefer to knit his head and body in one plain colour then that works just fine too!
The sample was worked in Rowan Cashsoft DK (now discontinued). A substitute yarn is shown below.
Daniel the Spaniel is a knitted stuffed toy designed by Penny Connor. This charming amigurumi-style spaniel measures approximately 15cm (6 inches) in height from the bottom of the body to the tops of the fluffy ears. The pattern was inspired by the designer's own beloved spaniel and captures the endearing features of the breed in a compact, huggable toy form.
This is a knitting project classified at intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for knitters who have progressed beyond basic techniques. The pattern incorporates specialty knitting stitches and shaping methods typical of amigurumi construction, which is the Japanese art of creating small stuffed toys through knitting or crochet.
A key technique featured in this pattern is the loop stitch, which creates the characteristic fluffy texture of the spaniel's ears and adds visual interest to the finished toy. The designer has included an alternative ear design for knitters who may be unfamiliar with or prefer not to use the loop stitch technique, ensuring accessibility for various skill levels within the intermediate range.
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting techniques including:
To complete Daniel the Spaniel, knitters will need 3.25mm knitting needles and DK weight yarn. DK (double knitting) yarn is a medium-weight yarn that works well for creating toys with good stitch definition and appropriate fabric density for stuffing. The specific yarn color choices are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, but typical spaniel colorways would include browns, blacks, and creams to achieve realistic breed coloring.
Additional materials not detailed in the provided content would typically include fiberfill or polyester stuffing for filling the toy and yarn needle for seaming and finishing.
This downloadable PDF pattern comes with designer support. Penny Connor welcomes questions and clarifications from knitters working through the pattern and provides contact information for assistance. The pattern represents an evolution of one of the designer's earliest creations, refined over several years of feedback and personal use.
