Product Description
I fell in love with this stitch pattern. After first knitting a sample, I wanted to put it in everything. The pattern is worked on every row, but that is not a problem when working in the round. Plus you get a sharper image of the pattern when you have increases and decreases on almost every row.
What a wonderful yarn! The Plucky Knitter, Bello, has 55% Merino and 45% Cashmere; AND you can certainly feel the cashmere. It feels wonderful running through your fingers.
The color is gorgeous with its tonal shades of green. It works well with the pattern of dancing leaves. It gives the leaves some depth.
Dancing Leaves Knit Gloves and Mittens by Mary Triplett
What is Being Made
The Dancing Leaves pattern creates a pair of knit gloves or mittens featuring an intricate leaf motif stitch pattern. This intermediate-level knitting project showcases a dynamic stitch design that the designer fell in love with after creating an initial sample. The pattern is worked in the round using double-pointed needles, making it ideal for creating fitted hand wear with a seamless construction.
Stitch Pattern and Techniques
The Dancing Leaves design centers on a distinctive leaf stitch pattern that is worked on every row. The pattern incorporates increases and decreases on almost every row, which creates the characteristic leaf shapes and movement throughout the fabric. Working the pattern in the round actually enhances the visual impact of the design, providing a sharper, more defined image of the dancing leaves motif compared to working flat.
The base fabric is worked in Stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth canvas that allows the leaf pattern to stand out prominently. The combination of the stockinette background with the frequent shaping stitches creates depth and visual interest in the finished piece.
Construction Method
This pattern is worked in the round, eliminating the need for seaming. The designer arranges stitches over three needles, with 28 stitches cast on the first needle for the right hand, allowing for even distribution and comfortable working. This seamless construction is particularly well-suited for gloves and mittens, as it creates a smooth, comfortable fit without bulky seams.
Yarn and Materials
The Dancing Leaves pattern requires approximately 160–180 yards of yarn, making it an excellent project for using up a single skein. The sample shown is knit in Plucky Knitter Bello, a luxurious blend of 55% Merino and 45% Cashmere in the colorway Green Goddess. This yarn composition provides exceptional softness and a premium feel as the yarn runs through your fingers during knitting. The tonal shades of green in the Bello colorway work beautifully with the dancing leaves pattern, adding depth and dimension to the leaf shapes.
The pattern calls for US #2.5 Double Pointed Needles and is designed to work with fingering weight yarn, though the pattern attributes list the yarn weight as 4-ply, which is consistent with fingering weight classifications.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 7 stitches and 11 rows per 1 inch in Stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating gloves and mittens that fit correctly, as even small variations can affect the final measurements of the hand wear.
Skill Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience. The frequent increases and decreases required to create the dancing leaves pattern, combined with working in the round on double-pointed needles, require solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with shaping techniques.
