Dachshund Puppy Knitting Pattern by Amanda Berry

What is Being Made

This pattern creates a sweet little Dachshund Puppy toy through knitting. The finished project is a small, quick-to-knit stuffed animal that captures the charming character of a dachshund puppy. The toy uses minimal yarn, making it an efficient project for crafters looking to complete a small handmade gift or collection piece.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project designed for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern teaches and employs several fundamental knitting techniques essential for toy making:

  • Casting on: Uses a long tail cast on method to begin stitches
  • Casting off: Employs a pull-through cast off technique, where yarn is cut leaving at least a 30cm tail, threaded onto a darning needle, and sewn through remaining stitches before removing from the knitting needle
  • Basic stitches: Incorporates knit and purl stitches as foundational elements
  • Shaping: Uses increases and decreases to form the puppy's three-dimensional structure
  • Assembly: Requires seaming pieces together with a darning needle
  • Finishing: Includes embroidery work to add details and character to the completed toy

Materials

Yarn: The pattern calls for DK weight cotton yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight, classified as weight category 3 - light). Only a few grammes are needed, with the design using two shades of yarn. The puppy photographed in the pattern was knitted using Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK, which is 100% cotton, in the shades Pure Black and Soft Fudge.

Needles and Notions: A pair of 2.5mm (US 1½) single pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm is required. A darning needle is essential for seaming seams and finishing embroidery details.
