What is Being Made

The Crocus Bag is a light and lacy summer bag designed by Sharon Slarke. This knitted accessory measures 26cm (10 inches) wide by 25cm (9.75 inches) tall by 7cm (2.75 inches) deep, making it a practical yet elegant carryall for warm weather. The bag features an open, airy construction that showcases delicate stitch work while remaining structured enough for everyday use.

Construction Method

This bag is knitted in the round using a single circular needle, which eliminates the need for seaming the main body. The only sewing required is attaching the strap once the knitting is complete, making this an efficient construction method that minimizes finishing work. The designer offers an optional variation for the top opening: knitters may work a K1, P1 rib for the band if they wish to draw in the opening slightly more than the standard pattern allows.

Stitch Patterns and Techniques

The primary stitch pattern used throughout the Crocus Bag is the Crocus Stitch, which creates the distinctive lacy appearance characteristic of this design. The stitch pattern originates from volume three of a 1980s English knitting series titled Creative Knitting. The pattern also incorporates Irish Moss Stitch, a textured stitch that alternates knit and purl stitches in a specific sequence to create visual interest and dimension.

Key abbreviations used in the pattern include:

• yfon — yarn to front of needle
• skpo — slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over (a left-leaning decrease)
• yf — yarn forward

The bag is intentionally knitted on smaller needles relative to the yarn weight to create a firmer, more durable fabric that will hold its shape and withstand regular use.

Materials and Specifications

The Crocus Bag is designed to be knitted in DK weight yarn (also called 8 ply). The pattern calls for three 50-gram balls of yarn, with each ball yielding approximately 120 meters (131 yards). The original design specifies Heirloom 8ply cotton, which is 100% cotton—an ideal fiber choice for a summer bag due to its breathability and natural drape. However, any DK or 8 ply yarn may be substituted according to individual preference and availability.

The required needles are one 42cm (16-inch) circular needle in size 3.75mm, or whatever size is needed to achieve the correct gauge. The gauge for this pattern is 23 stitches to 10cm (4 inches) when working the Crocus Stitch on 3.75mm needles. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the bag to reach the intended finished measurements.

In addition to yarn and needles, knitters will need woven fabric for lining the interior of the bag, providing structure and a finished appearance.

Difficulty Level
