Product Description
Part of my Skull a Day for a Year project. Hand Crochet scarf with a pattern of skulls. This is a companion piece to my hat and glove patterns. The skulls are stacked instead of alternating because it was the simplest way to make them. Alternating skulls would have called for 1a half skull on every other section, and I didn't like the way it looked. Pattern is for 2 weights of yarn, Sport or Worsted. Sport weight uses about 400 yards. Worsted about 300 yards. The pattern turns over half way so the skulls face upright on both ends. The finished measurements are 6 inches wide by 60 inches long. There are pictures of every row, and an option to make the stand alone teeth on every row. Every effort has been made to make these instruction error free and clearly written. My e mail address is included for help. If you find an error, I would appreciate if you would let me know. I will send you a free pattern of your choice as a thank you.
Creepy Skull Scarf by Spider Mambo
What is Being Made
The Creepy Skull Scarf is an advanced-level crochet design that creates a decorative scarf featuring skull motifs. This downloadable PDF pattern from independent designer Spider Mambo offers crafters the ability to create a finished garment with distinctive skull imagery worked into the fabric. The pattern provides instructions for two different yarn weight options, allowing makers to choose between a lighter or heavier finished scarf based on their preferred yarn and hook sizes.
Techniques Used
This advanced crochet project employs several intermediate to advanced techniques to achieve its creepy skull design. The pattern includes an optional decorative teeth edging that hangs below the main edge of the scarf, created during the initial rows of the project. Makers will work through chain foundations and then build rows by working on the opposite side of the chain, a technique that creates a reversible or finished appearance on both sides. The pattern also incorporates back loop double crochet stitches, which create texture by crocheting through only the back thread of the double loops on top of stitches. This selective stitch placement is essential for developing the visual definition of the skull pattern throughout the scarf.
Stitches Used
The Creepy Skull Scarf pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined strategically to form the skull imagery:
- Chain stitch (ch) – Used to create the foundation and spacing within rows
- Single crochet (sc) – Provides a tight, dense fabric base
- Half double crochet (hdc) – Offers medium height and structure
- Double crochet (dc) – Creates taller stitches for dimension and pattern definition
- Back loop double crochet (BL dc) – Worked through only the back loop to create textured ridges that define skull features
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining and finishing
Materials and Tools
The pattern accommodates multiple yarn weight options to suit different preferences and finished scarf sizes. For the lighter version, crafters will need Sport Weight Yarn or DK Weight Yarn totaling 2 skeins of 80 grams each, paired with a size G crochet hook. For the heavier version, the pattern calls for Aran Weight or Worsted Weight Yarn using 1 skein, worked with a size I crochet hook. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing the completed scarf. The pattern provides clear abbreviations and instructions for both yarn weight options, with the Aran or Worsted weight specifications noted in parentheses throughout the rows, making it easy for makers to follow their chosen version.
