Product Description
A blanket you can wear. As Cozy as life gets.
Knit from side to side, you’ll create two openings for sleeves and use short rows to shape the “blanket” part to help it curve around the front and around the back of your neck. Sleeves are worked by picking up stitches from the armholes and using short rows to shape the sleeve caps. Sizing is very flexible—read through the “Choosing a Size” section of the pattern to decide which size you prefer.
Sizes 1A and 1B work for full bust measurements up to ~32” fully overlapped over the bust,Sizes 2A, 2B, and 2C work for full bust measurements from ~32-40” fully overlapped over the bust,Sizes 3A, 3B, and 3C work for full bust measurements from ~40-45” fully overlapped over the bust,Sizes 4A, 4B, and 4C work for full bust measurements from ~45-52” busts fully overlapped over the bust, and up to size 60” busts worn without fully overlapping the fronts.
Yarn requirements are listed in table form in the last photo on the left of this pattern listing.
Cozy McBlanket by Mary Annarella
What is Being Made
The Cozy McBlanket is a unique blanket-inspired garment with sleeves, designed by Mary Annarella. This innovative project combines the comfort of a blanket with the functionality of a wearable piece, featuring two sleeve openings and strategic shaping to create a garment that drapes around the front and back of the neck. The design offers flexible sizing options, allowing knitters to customize the fit to their preferences by reviewing the "Choosing a Size" section before beginning the project.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Cozy McBlanket employs several intermediate-level knitting techniques to achieve its distinctive silhouette. The main body is worked from side to side, a sideways construction method that creates two natural openings for the sleeves. Short rows are used extensively throughout the pattern—first to shape the blanket portion so it curves elegantly around the front and back of the neck, and again when constructing the sleeves to shape the sleeve caps. This combination of techniques allows for custom shaping and a tailored fit despite the blanket-like aesthetic.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used in the Cozy McBlanket is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for a blanket-style garment. Stockinette is worked throughout the main body and sleeves, providing a clean canvas that showcases the yarn and allows the short-row shaping to create subtle, elegant curves. The pattern requires attention to gauge in stockinette stitch, with particular emphasis on row gauge due to the sideways construction method.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Cozy McBlanket is designed to be worked in sport weight yarn, a lightweight yet substantial yarn category ideal for creating drape and comfort. The pattern specifications are based on Magpie Fibers Nest Sport, which provides 350 yards per 100 grams. Yardage requirements vary by size and are detailed in a chart on page 17 of the pattern. Knitters should use a size 5 needle (or the size necessary to achieve the correct gauge) to work this project. The designer's pre-blocking gauge was 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches in stockinette stitch, with post-blocking gauge reaching 21 stitches and 30.5 rows over 4 inches—demonstrating the importance of blocking to achieve the intended finished dimensions and fit, particularly for a sideways-constructed garment where row gauge significantly impacts the final measurements.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an intermediate project, the Cozy McBlanket is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more advanced shaping techniques. The sideways construction and extensive use of short rows require understanding of these intermediate methods, making this pattern an excellent choice for developing technical proficiency while creating a beautiful, wearable finished object.
