Product Description
Bands of moss stitch and stocking stitch form the main part of this chunky knit, with the yoke all in moss stitch. An attractive staggered lower edge with side slits give the design great style. Just a little side shaping is worked to give a little extra ease to the lower part. The yarn is so cosy and luxurious for cooler seasons but will work well in any chunky yarn.

Cosy-Up Knitted Top by Pat Menchini
What is Being Made
The Cosy-Up is a women's knitted top designed as an intermediate-level project suitable for knitters with some experience. This garment is available in seven size options, ranging from bust measurements of 76-81 cm (30-32 inches) through to 137-142 cm (54-56 inches), with finished bust measurements spanning 88 cm to 149 cm. The top features front shoulder shaping and is designed to provide a comfortable, cosy fit. The finished length from shoulder shaping measures between 56 to 60 cm depending on size.
Techniques and Construction
This knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern involves working with two different needle sizes to create proper fabric structure and tension control. Stitch holders are used during construction, indicating that the pattern likely involves techniques such as setting aside stitches for neckline finishing or armhole shaping. The garment construction progresses from casting on through to shoulder shaping, requiring knitters to follow shaping instructions and manage stitch counts across multiple sizes.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch construction utilizes stockinette stitch (st-st), which forms the foundation of the fabric. The pattern also incorporates a main pattern stitch, indicating the inclusion of textured or decorative stitching beyond basic stockinette. Tension measurements are provided for both stockinette stitch and the main pattern, demonstrating that stitch variety is central to the design.
Materials and Specifications

- Additional Notions: 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction
Tension Requirements
Achieving correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies 14 stitches and 19 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stockinette stitch using 6 mm needles. For the main pattern stitch, the tension is 15 stitches and 21¼ rows to 10 cm (4 inches) also using 6 mm needles. Knitters are strongly advised to test tension before beginning the project; if tension is too loose, a finer needle size should be used to achieve the correct gauge and ensure the finished garment meets the specified measurements.
Yarn Considerations
The pattern is designed specifically for Rico Essentials Alpaca Blend Chunky yarn. Should this yarn become unavailable, knitters selecting a replacement yarn must ensure the tension of the substitute matches the stated tension in the pattern to maintain proper garment proportions and finished measurements.
