Product Description
I love dogs of all sizes and volunteer at a dog rescue. This hat features two small dogs. The first is the much loved Corgi (the Queen’s Dog) with short legs, big ears and a big heart. The second is the Shih Tzu, or the Shih Poo (Poodle / Shih Tzu mix). I always think of these small fluffy pups as Mop Dogs. Always happy and great cuddlers.
Either dog can be personalized with duplicate stitching after knitting with golds, blacks, greys or browns to make it YOUR pup. A few more duplicate stitches add nose, eyes, tongue & ear detail.
In five sizes from Preemie to Lg Adult, worked in fingering, they are fun to knit for a special baby or anyone who loves dogs... Smaller sizes don’t show the pup’s legs in the knit.
Corgi and Shih Tzu Poo Hat by Idle Hands Knits
What is Being Made
The Corgi and Shih Tzu Poo Hat is a knitted beanie featuring charming dog designs inspired by two beloved small dog breeds. This downloadable knitting pattern offers five different sizes to accommodate various head measurements, ranging from Preemie through Large Adult. The hat celebrates both the Corgi—known for its short legs, large ears, and affectionate nature—and the Shih Poo (a Poodle and Shih Tzu mix), playfully referred to as a "Mop Dog" for its fluffy appearance and cheerful temperament. The design allows for personalization through duplicate stitching after the main knitting is complete, enabling crafters to customize the dogs to resemble their own pets.
Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project uses the duplicate stitch technique as a key embellishment method. After completing the main knit structure, crafters apply duplicate stitches to add personalized details to the dog designs. These stitches can be worked in multiple colors including golds, blacks, greys, and browns to create realistic features. The duplicate stitch method allows for adding facial details such as eyes, noses, tongues, and ear definition without requiring complex colorwork during the initial knitting process. Smaller sizes in the pattern do not display the dogs' legs in the knit itself, simplifying the design for Preemie and Newborn sizes while larger sizes showcase more complete dog figures.
Stitches and Knitting Details
The pattern is worked in fingering weight yarn, which creates a fine, detailed fabric ideal for displaying the dog motifs. The hat is constructed in the round, as is typical for beanie-style projects. While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the intermediate difficulty level suggests the pattern includes standard knitting techniques appropriate for crafters with foundational skills beyond basic stockinette stitch.
Materials: Yarn and Needles
This pattern calls for fingering weight yarn, with Valley Yarns Huntington Fingering specifically used on the sample hats shown. However, any fingering-weight yarn that meets the specified gauge can be substituted, providing flexibility for yarn selection. The pattern requires needles suitable for fingering-weight knitting in the round, though specific needle sizes are not included in the provided content. Crafters will also need yarn in multiple colors for the duplicate stitch embellishment phase—golds, blacks, greys, and browns are recommended for creating realistic dog features and personalization.
Size Range and Finished Measurements
Available in five sizes, this pattern accommodates a wide range of head sizes:
- Preemie
- Newborn
- Infant/Toddler
- Child/Small Adult
- Large Adult
The pattern emphasizes choosing the correct size based on finished circumference measurements to ensure proper fit. The Newborn size is featured in the accompanying photograph.
Design Inspiration and Personalization
Created by Idle Hands Knits, this pattern celebrates dog lovers and those who work with dog rescues. The designer's passion for dogs of all sizes is evident in the thoughtful inclusion of two distinct breeds with different characteristics. The personalization aspect through duplicate stitching makes this hat particularly special—crafters can customize the dog designs to match their own pets by adjusting stitch colors and adding individual details. This makes the hat an ideal handmade gift for new babies, dog enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a unique, wearable art piece featuring their favorite canine companion.
