Product Description

The blanket uses the corner to corner stitch in two different colours to create a geometric pattern. Using two high contrast colours will make the pattern stand out more. However, similar colours will produce a more subtle look.

The pattern assumes a basic knowledge of the corner to corner technique. A graph alone can be used to make the blanket. One square of the graph represents one C2C stitch. The blanket is worked from the bottom right corner of the graph.

Written instructions are also provided for those who prefer to use written instructions instead of the graph alone.

Three graph sizes are provided. The graph can be adapted to any size smaller then the large. This means removing some rows from the large graph. However the graph alone will have to be used as the written instructions are specific to the sizes given.

The document contains UK and US terms. Please just print the pages specific to the terms you require.

Connected Squares Blanket by Amy Ziehn

Project Overview

The Connected Squares Blanket is an intermediate-level crochet project designed by Amy Ziehn that creates a striking geometric pattern through the strategic use of two contrasting yarn colors. This downloadable PDF pattern guides crafters through creating a blanket using the versatile corner-to-corner (C2C) stitch technique, a method that combines simple rhythmic stitching with impressive visual results.

What Is Being Made

This project produces a finished blanket featuring a geometric pattern created through colorwork. The design leverages the natural structure of the C2C stitch to build connected squares that form the overall pattern. The blanket's visual impact can be customized based on color choice: high-contrast color combinations make the geometric pattern stand out dramatically, while similar or analogous colors create a more subtle, tonal appearance.

Crochet Techniques Used

The primary technique employed in this pattern is the corner-to-corner (C2C) stitch, also known as the corner-to-corner method. This technique is worked in two different colors to achieve the geometric colorwork pattern. The C2C method builds the blanket by working from one corner diagonally across to the opposite corner, creating small squares that connect to form larger design elements. The pattern assumes crafters have basic foundational knowledge of the corner-to-corner technique, though stitch-specific information is included within the pattern instructions.

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Corner-to-corner (C2C) stitch worked in two colors
  • Colorwork integration to create geometric patterns within the blanket structure
  • Pattern-based graph work using the C2C foundation

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with the designer's sample using Spot Saver USA Style yarn at 200g/312m yardage. While this specific yarn is exclusive to Spotlight in Australia, the pattern is compatible with any worsted weight acrylic yarn, making it accessible to crocheters with various yarn sources and preferences. Worsted weight yarn creates a blanket with good drape and structure while remaining manageable for intermediate-level stitchers.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While the C2C stitch itself follows a simple, rhythmic pattern, the two-color colorwork and the requirement for prior C2C familiarity position this project as suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond absolute beginners.
