Product Description
This pattern uses simple yarn overs and k2togs to create a subtle spider web like shape. Perfect for Halloween but subtle enough to wear all year long!
Knit top down from a garter tab this shawl is fairly quick and easy to knit especially with aran yarn. The size of this shawl can easily be changed by knitting as many pattern repeats as you want, but the yardage required will be different.
Tension is not very important for this project and so you can use any yarn you like but again if you knit this at a different gauges the yardage required may be different. It's always better to overestimate the amount of yarn you'll need
Cobweb Shawl by Charlotte McHale
What is Being Made
The Cobweb Shawl is a knitted triangular or crescent-shaped wrap designed by Charlotte McHale. This is a versatile accessory piece that can be worn as a shoulder shawl, neck wrap, or decorative garment layer. The shawl features an adjustable sizing system, making it suitable for crafters who want to customize the finished dimensions to their preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly knitting project employs several fundamental techniques that make it accessible to newer knitters while still creating an elegant finished piece. The shawl construction begins with a provisional cast-on, a technique that allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless finishing. The main body uses repeat pattern rows that are worked multiple times to build the shawl's depth and size. The design incorporates yarn overs throughout the pattern, which create the characteristic openwork or lace-like qualities typical of cobweb-style shawls. Stitch markers are used strategically to help track pattern repeats and maintain consistency across rows. The shawl features a garter stitch border, a simple textured edge created by knitting every row, which provides structure and definition to the piece. The finishing process includes picking up and knitting stitches from the edges, a technique that allows the crafter to add the border after the main body is complete. Finally, the piece is blocked, a finishing process that shapes and sets the stitches for a polished, professional appearance.
Stitches Used
- Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the base of the fabric
- Purl (P): The reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural variation
- Yarn Over (Yo): Creates decorative holes and lace effects throughout the pattern
- Knit 2 Together (K2tog): A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count and shapes the shawl
- Slip Stitch (Sl): Used at the beginning of rows for a neat edge finish
- Garter Stitch: Created by knitting every row, forms the border with a ridged texture
Materials and Tools
The Cobweb Shawl requires approximately 250 meters of yarn in Aran weight. However, the pattern is flexible and accommodates multiple yarn weights including DK, Sport, Worsted, and Aran, allowing crafters to choose based on their preferences and stash. 6mm (UK size 4 / US size 10) circular needles are required for working the project. The pattern calls for 8 stitch markers to help organize and track the pattern repeats throughout the knitting process. The recommended tension is 14 stitches and 22 rows of the main pattern measuring 10cm (4 inches) square, though the designer notes that tension is not critical for this project since the final size is completely adjustable through changing the number of pattern repeats.
Sizing and Customization
One of the key features of the Cobweb Shawl is its easily adjustable sizing. Crafters can customize the finished dimensions by simply changing the amount of pattern repeats worked. The pattern instructions specify repeating rows 4 to 23 four times or until the shawl reaches approximately 1.5cm (½ inch) less than the desired finished size. This flexibility means the same pattern can be worked in different sizes without requiring multiple pattern versions, making it an economical choice for designers and crafters who want options.
