Product Description
In this case, Cobble isn’t a stone, but a mashup of cable-and-bobble. Knit in a bulky yarn, it’s a three stitch cable rather than a four stitch, as four would make it too bulky when using a heavier yarn. Tahki Arlington was used in the samples. It’s soft enough for a baby and warm enough for a winter wind. The bobbles are visible but don’t “pop” off the hat too far. And, as with all hats I’ve designed in the last few months, there isn’t just one but TWO VIKKEL BRAIDS in the brim. I love them. How did I ever knit without them? All in all, its a subtle hat in soft colors. Faux fur pom poms (or as I call them, Tribbles) make for a modern look. Also available in a Slouch version named: “Cobble Slouch Cap”
Cobble Together Beanie by Idle Hands Knits
What Is Being Made
The Cobble Together Beanie is a knitted winter hat designed by Idle Hands Knits, available in three sizes: Infant, Adult, and Large Adult. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a subtle, soft-colored beanie finished with a faux fur pom pom (referred to as a "Tribble" by the designer). The design is also available in a slouch version called the Cobble Slouch Cap.
Design and Construction
The beanie features a creative mashup of cable and bobble stitches, giving the hat its distinctive name "Cobble." The design uses a three-stitch cable rather than the traditional four-stitch cable, as a four-stitch cable would create excessive bulk when worked in heavier yarn. The bobbles are intentionally designed to be visible without protruding too far from the hat surface, creating a refined aesthetic. The brim incorporates two Vikkel braids, a decorative braiding technique that adds visual interest and structural integrity to the hat opening.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several intermediate knitting techniques despite its beginner difficulty rating:
- Cable stitches – Three-stitch cables form the primary textured pattern throughout the crown
- Bobble stitches – Textured embellishments worked into the design for subtle dimension
- Vikkel braids – Two decorative braids worked into the brim, creating an elegant finished edge
- Pom pom attachment – Faux fur pom pom secured to the crown for a modern finishing touch
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Cobble Together Beanie is designed to be worked in chunky weight yarn, making it a quick knit suitable for beginners. The pattern samples were created using Tahki Arlington, a soft yarn appropriate for delicate skin. This yarn choice provides warmth suitable for winter weather while maintaining softness, making the beanie comfortable enough for babies and protective enough for cold wind conditions.
Sizing and Finished Measurements
The pattern provides three finished sizes with the following dimensions:
- Infant: 7.5 inches (19 cm) height; 16 inches (40.5 cm) circumference above brim
- Adult: 9 inches (23 cm) height; 18 inches (46 cm) circumference above brim
- Large Adult: 9 inches (23 cm) height; 19.5 inches (50 cm) circumference above brim
Gauge and Needles
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 12 stitches by 18 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. This gauge measurement is essential for achieving the correct finished size and ensuring proper fit across all three size options.
