Product Description

Cloudy days get a bad rap, but there’s so much to behold in the celestial mist. Who hasn’t searched for familiar shapes among the puffs of white? From the wispy cirrus clouds to the foreboding cumulonimbus, their ephemeral beauty makes time stand still as the heavens advance. On all but the clearest of days, we have a free ticket to an amazing moving picture show. Cloud Gazer is a top-down crescent shawl with an all-over knit-purl pattern. The simple shaping and straightforward stitch pattern are perfect for daydreaming. The knits and purls shift every few rows, creating diagonals of stratocumulus clouds. Knit in a plush merino-cashmere-nylon fingering, an ethereal halo adds to the reverie. The curling ends flutter in the breeze as you watch Mother Nature paint her happy little clouds on the vast blue canvas.

The shawl can be worked until you have just enough yarn to bind off using Bronwyn’s Kfbf Bind-Off. Using a kitchen scale is helpful for using up all of your yarn.

Cloud Gazer Shawl by Bronwyn Hahn

Project Overview

The Cloud Gazer Shawl is a top-down crescent shawl designed by independent designer Bronwyn Hahn. This knitting project draws inspiration from the beauty of clouds and their ever-changing shapes, translating that celestial imagery into a wearable textile. The shawl celebrates the visual poetry of cloud formations, from wispy cirrus clouds to dramatic cumulonimbus patterns, making it an ideal accessory for those who appreciate nature's moving art.

Construction and Shaping

This shawl features a straightforward top-down construction method, which allows knitters to begin at the neck and work downward toward the edges. The crescent shawl shape creates a graceful silhouette that drapes beautifully around the shoulders. The design incorporates simple shaping techniques that make the pattern accessible while still producing professional results. The curling ends of the finished shawl flutter gently in the breeze, adding movement and dimension to the piece.

Stitch Pattern and Techniques

Cloud Gazer employs an all-over knit-purl pattern as its primary design element. The knit and purl stitches shift every few rows, creating diagonal visual effects that resemble stratocumulus cloud formations. This alternating stitch pattern is both meditative and visually striking, producing texture and depth without requiring complex colorwork or intricate stitch abbreviations. The straightforward nature of the stitch pattern makes it perfect for knitters who enjoy a relaxing project that still allows for creative daydreaming.

Yarn and Materials

Cloud Gazer is designed to be knit in a plush merino-cashmere-nylon fingering weight yarn. This luxurious fiber blend combines the warmth of merino wool, the softness of cashmere, and the durability of nylon. The fingering weight (4-ply) creates a delicate fabric with excellent drape. The yarn's composition produces an ethereal halo effect around the finished stitches, enhancing the cloud-like quality of the shawl and adding a dreamy, soft appearance to the completed project.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated at an intermediate difficulty level, making it suitable for knitters who are confidently adventurous. The pattern assumes basic knitting knowledge and comfort with fundamental techniques. While the construction method and stitch patterns are straightforward, the intermediate rating suggests that knitters should have experience reading patterns and managing shaping increases. This difficulty level makes Cloud Gazer an excellent choice for knitters looking to expand their skills without tackling overly complex techniques.

Design Inspiration

The Cloud Gazer Shawl celebrates the often-overlooked beauty of cloudy days. Rather than dismissing overcast weather, the design encourages knitters to appreciate the celestial mist and the familiar shapes hidden within clouds. The pattern's knit-purl texture directly references cloud formations, making the finished shawl a wearable tribute to the sky's ever-changing landscape and nature's free entertainment.
