Product Description

Who doesn’t love a snuggly double-knit dragon wrapped around their neck, protecting their wearer from the cold? This pattern was originally run as an MKAL on Ravelry and retains its original clue-styled release in a single document, which includes all 6 charts and the story.

You will need 550-600 yards of main color (MC) and 550-600 yards of contrasting color (CC) in a fingering weight yarn. I used Malabrigo Finito, but any fingering yarn should work. This scarf would look lovely with a color-shifting yarn! 3.25 mm needles are working great for this weight of project, you could use a smaller needle if desired. Anything larger and you may run short on yarn.

Yarn yardage is given for fingering weight, however, you can make this scarf in whatever weight yarn you desire

Cloud Dragon Scarf by Tania Richter

Project Overview

The Cloud Dragon Scarf is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Tania Richter. This downloadable PDF pattern guides knitters through creating a scarf described as being "of draconic proportions," combining technical skill with imaginative design. The project is structured as a MKAL (Mystery Knit-Along), adding an element of discovery to the knitting experience.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a scarf featuring dragon-inspired design elements. The finished piece showcases the visual complexity and texture that comes from advanced knitting techniques, making it a statement accessory for adventurous fiber artists.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Cloud Dragon Scarf employs double-knitting as its primary advanced technique. Double-knitting is a sophisticated method that creates a reversible fabric with two distinct colors or patterns visible on each side of the work. This technique requires knitters to work with two yarns simultaneously, alternating between them to build intricate colorwork patterns. The pattern acknowledges that double-knitting may be new to many crafters and recommends consulting beginner tutorials to master this method before beginning the project.

The pattern also specifies the use of Judy's Magic Cast On, a specialized cast-on method that creates a seamless, elastic edge particularly suited to projects using multiple yarns or requiring flexibility at the starting point.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided content, the double-knitting technique forms the foundation of the stitch work. This method involves creating knit and purl combinations across two working yarns to achieve the reversible colorwork effect that brings the dragon design to life.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Between 550 and 600 yards of fingering weight yarn in each color used. The pattern is designed to work with any quality fingering weight yarn. Recommended yarn options include Malabrigo Finito, Crystal Palace Yarns Mini Mochi, and other fingering weight options.
  • Needles: Appropriate needles for fingering weight yarn and double-knitting construction (specific needle size not provided in excerpt).

Difficulty Level

This scarf is rated as an intermediate project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to explore more complex colorwork and construction methods. The double-knitting technique and MKAL format require focus and pattern-reading skills.
