What is Being Made

The Cloud Cowl is a luxuriously soft, oversized knitted cowl designed to feel like being hugged by a warm cloud. This completely reversible neckwear piece measures 60cm in length when laid flat, with a circumference of 120cm and a width of 20cm, making it a generous, versatile accessory suitable for various styling options. The reversible construction means it can be worn with either side facing outward, providing flexibility in how you coordinate it with your wardrobe.

Techniques and Construction

The Cloud Cowl employs a distinctive and beginner-friendly approach to creating an exceptionally soft, airy fabric. The key technique involves using loosely spun yarn knitted on needles three sizes larger than standard ball band recommendations. This intentional oversizing of needles relative to yarn weight creates a fabric that traps air within its structure, resulting in exceptional warmth and a cloud-like tactile experience. The loose construction is balanced by a bold parallelogram stitch pattern that provides visual interest and structure while remaining simple enough for beginners to execute successfully.

Materials

This project uses Maggi's Merino Chunky by Maggi Knits, a 100% Merino Wool yarn available in 60 meters per 50-gram ball. The sample shown uses the colorway 13 Grey and requires approximately 4 balls of yarn, with actual yardage used being approximately 174 meters or 190 yards (145 grams or 5.1 ounces). The pattern recommends purchasing a full 4th ball to ensure sufficient yarn for completion, as the sample used 3 balls with very little remaining. The project is worked on larger needles than typically suggested for chunky weight yarn, so yarn selection should prioritize loosely spun chunky yarns suitable for this needle-upsizing technique.
