Clotylda Knit Hat by sochaknits

What is Being Made

Clotylda is a downloadable knitting pattern for a fitted hat designed by Maria Socha. This intermediate-level project creates a structured, close-fitting hat available in three sizes: Small (to fit 54cm / 21¼" head circumference), Medium (56cm / 22"), and Large (58cm / 22¾"). The finished hat measures between 20–22cm in height depending on size, making it a versatile everyday accessory suitable for various head sizes.

Techniques Used

The Clotylda pattern employs several essential knitting techniques that intermediate crafters should be comfortable executing. Cable work is a primary feature, with the pattern incorporating cable crosses that add visual interest and texture to the hat's construction. Bobble stitches are used as decorative elements, created through a specific sequence of yarn overs and decreases that form small three-dimensional knots on the fabric surface. The pattern utilizes circular knitting worked in the round using circular needles and double-pointed needles, which creates seamless construction ideal for hat projects. Increases are incorporated using make-one purlwise (m1p) techniques for shaping, and decreases such as sk2p (slip, knit 2 together, pass slipped stitch over) help shape the crown. Knitters will also work with stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the rounds.

Stitches Used

The pattern relies on fundamental stitches combined with decorative elements:

  • Stockinette stitch (Stst) – the primary fabric base, created by alternating knit and purl rows in flat work or knit rounds in circular knitting
  • Cable stitches – specifically C8 (cross 8 stitches), which involves slipping stitches to a cable needle, working stitches from the main needle, then working the cable needle stitches to create twisted rope-like textures
  • Bobble stitch (mb) – a decorative technique worked by creating multiple yarn overs and stitches within a single stitch, then decreasing them back down to form a raised knot
  • Knit and purl stitches – the foundational stitches that form the fabric
  • Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative holes and increases within stitch patterns
  • Decreases – including sk2p and other shaping decreases for crown shaping

Materials and Tools

The Clotylda pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with yardage requirements varying by size: approximately 150 meters (160 yards) for Small, 170 meters (180 yards) for Medium, and 190 meters (200 yards) for Large. The sample shown was knitted using Malabrigo Rios in the colorway English Rose, a popular choice for its softness and vibrant color palette. Knitters will need US#6 (4.00mm) circular needles and US#7 (4.50mm) circular needles and double-pointed needles (dpn) for different sections of the pattern. Additional notions include two cable needles for managing cable stitches, stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a tapestry needle or hook for finishing and weaving in ends. The gauge is set at 20 stitches by 26 rows over 10cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch on the larger needle, making accurate gauge swatching essential before beginning the project.
