Cliffridge Cardigan by Irina Anikeeva
What is Being Made
The Cliffridge Cardigan is a women's knitted cardigan designed by Irina Anikeeva, available in eight sizes ranging from XS to 4XL to fit bust measurements from 28/30 inches (71/76 cm) up to 56/58 inches (142/147 cm). The finished cardigan features a bust circumference of 34 to 62 inches (85 to 155 cm) with intended positive ease of 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm), making it a comfortable, wearable layering piece. The garment is worked flat in one piece construction, offering an efficient knitting process that minimizes seaming.
Knitting Techniques
This intermediate-level cardigan employs several key knitting techniques to create its finished design. The construction method of working flat in one piece reduces the number of seams required and allows for seamless integration of pattern elements across the front and back sections. The pattern incorporates a Crochet Chain Provisional Cast On, a technique that allows stitches to be picked up later for a clean, finished edge—essential for cardigan construction where live stitches will be worked for button bands or other finishing details. Blocking is an important finishing step, as the gauge specifications are measured after blocking, indicating that the cardigan benefits from wet or steam blocking to achieve proper dimensions and drape.
Stitches Used
The Cliffridge Cardigan features two primary stitch patterns that work together to create visual interest and structure. Stockinette Stitch forms the main fabric of the cardigan, providing a smooth, classic knit surface. Lace Pattern is incorporated as a decorative element, with a 28-stitch repeat measuring 4¾ inches (12 cm) across on the working needle size. Additionally, Knit 1, Purl 1 Ribbing (k1, p1 rib) is used, likely for cuffs, waistband, or button band sections, providing elasticity and a finished appearance. The combination of these stitches—smooth stockinette, textured lace, and elastic ribbing—creates a balanced design suitable for a wearable cardigan.
Yarn and Materials
The Cliffridge Cardigan is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that creates a drapey, refined fabric. Yardage requirements vary by size, with the smallest size (XS) requiring approximately 910 yards and the largest size (4XL) requiring approximately 1450 yards. The pattern is worked on US 4/3.5 mm needles for the main fabric. Gauge is critical: 23 stitches and 32 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in Stockinette Stitch and Lace Pattern, while the ribbed sections gauge 25 stitches and 32 rows to 4 inches (10 cm), both measured after blocking. Additional notions required include stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping, waste yarn for the provisional cast on and stitch holders, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and seaming, and a crochet hook size E/3.5 mm specifically for executing the crochet chain provisional cast on technique.
