Product Description
My Niece Claudia requested a simple and unadorned pattern stitch for her fingerless gloves. After choosing a classic shade of grey I went with a couple of different basic rib stitch patterns along with garter and reverse stockinette. One of my favorite design features of the gloves is how the rib hugs the wrists and hands at just the right places.
These gloves will look great whether wearing your best coat or your favorite pair of “worn out” jeans.
♥For those knitters that appreciate video tutorials, I included a video on how to complete the increase used for these gloves. ♥The pattern also includes instructions for working the thumb flat as well as in the round.
♥As are all my knitting patterns; this pattern was test knit twice and both professionally copy and tech edited for accuracy. I am happy to help. You can always contact me if you have any questions along the way.
Skills needed for the fingerless gloves are knit, purl, slip, k2tog decrease and increase (explained in the pattern).

What Is Being Made
Claudia's Fingerless Gloves are a practical and stylish knitted accessory designed for adult female hands. These gloves feature an open-finger design, leaving the fingertips exposed while providing warmth and coverage for the palm, back of hand, and wrist area. The fingerless style makes them ideal for activities requiring dexterity while maintaining hand warmth, such as typing, texting, or detailed handwork.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project is created using knitting as the primary craft. The gloves are worked in the round using circular needles, a technique that creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for fitted garments like gloves. Working in rounds eliminates the need for seaming and ensures consistent stitch tension throughout the piece. The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle fitted, structured projects.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns Used
The primary stitch pattern employed in Claudia's Fingerless Gloves is k1, p1 rib, a classic ribbed texture created by alternating knit and purl stitches. This rib pattern is worked in repeating rounds and provides excellent elasticity and recovery, making it perfect for fitted wrist and hand wear. The ribbing is worked slightly stretched to achieve proper gauge and ensure a snug, comfortable fit.
Additional stitches and techniques featured in the pattern include:
- Knit (K) – The fundamental stitch creating smooth, V-shaped columns
- Purl (P) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination to create the rib texture
- K2tog (Knit Two Together) – A right-leaning decrease used for shaping the glove to fit the hand contours
- M1P or M1PR (Make One Purl or Make One Purl Right) – An increase stitch for adding stitches where needed; the pattern notes that either variation may be used according to knitter preference
The pattern also incorporates alternating knit and purl rounds to create textural variation and visual interest beyond the main rib stitch.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Claudia's Fingerless Gloves are designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a lightweight yarn category that provides excellent stitch definition and drape. The recommended yarn is Universal Yarn Uptown DK, a 100% acrylic fiber available in multiple colorways. The pattern calls for Color #131 (Granite) and requires 1 skein of yarn, which provides 273 yards (250 meters) per 100 grams – more than sufficient yardage for this project with potential for additional small projects from leftover yarn.
The acrylic fiber content makes these gloves easy to care for, durable, and suitable for frequent wear and washing. Acrylic yarn is also an economical choice while maintaining good stitch definition in the rib pattern.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires 2 size US6 (4mm) circular needles, each 16 inches (40cm) in length, or needle size adjusted to achieve proper gauge. Circular needles of this length are ideal for working small circumference projects like gloves using the two-circular-needle method, which allows for seamless in-the-round construction without the need for double-pointed needles.
Additional notions required include:
- 2 stitch markers – Used to mark pattern repeats and the beginning of rounds
- 1 stitch holder or scrap yarn – Used to hold stitches temporarily during construction, such as when shaping the thumb or finger openings
Gauge and Sizing
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct fit in fitted garments like gloves. Claudia's Fingerless Gloves are designed to fit an adult female hand with a 7-inch (18-centimeter) circumference. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rounds over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in k1, p1 rib when worked in rounds and slightly stretched. Knitters should swatch and measure their gauge before beginning the project, adjusting needle size as necessary to match the specified gauge, as even small variations can significantly affect the final fit of hand
