What is Being Made

The Classic Shell Stitch Vest is a tailored crochet waistcoat designed by Nancy Brown, available in six sizes ranging from Small (to fit bust 32-34") through 3X (to fit bust 56-58"). This garment features a sophisticated shell stitch pattern worked from the top down, creating a structured, fitted silhouette suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone piece.

Craft and Construction Technique

This is a crochet project classified at an intermediate skill level. The vest is constructed using a top-down method, beginning with the back shoulders and progressing downward to create the body of the garment. This construction approach allows for easy fitting adjustments and a seamless integration of the pattern repeats throughout the piece.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The pattern utilizes several key crochet stitches and special techniques:

  • Shell Stitch: The defining stitch of this design, constructed as (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the same space. This creates the elegant, scalloped texture characteristic of the vest.
  • Double Crochet (dc): Used as spacing stitches between shell repeats to maintain proper gauge and structure.
  • Chain Stitch (ch): Forms the foundation rows and creates the spaces within shells.
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Used for joining rounds and constructing picots.
  • Picot: A decorative special stitch defined as ch 3, sl st in the two front loops of the single crochet just made, adding delicate embellishment.
  • Single Crochet (sc): Used in joining techniques and as a base for picot details.

Gauge and Finished Dimensions

The pattern specifies a gauge of 1 Shell and 1 dc = 1 1/8" and 2 rows = 1". Finished bust measurements are 34" (Small), 38" (Medium), 42" (Large), 47" (XL), 52" (2X), and 56" (3X), providing a comfortable fit across a wide range of body sizes.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for Tatamy Tweed DK yarn by Kraemer Yarns, a worsted-weight yarn (DK weight) available in 3.5-ounce balls with 250 yards per ball. The recommended colorway is Faded Denim #1639. Yardage requirements vary by size: 4 balls for sizes Small through Large, and 6 balls for XL through 3X. A Boye crochet hook in U.S. size G is specified for achieving proper gauge with this yarn weight.

Pattern Structure

The vest pattern is organized by garment sections, beginning with detailed instructions for the back left shoulder. The top-down construction method allows the crocheter to work from the shoulder area downward, with shell stitches creating repeating pattern rows that build the body of the vest. The pattern provides specific stitch counts for each size, with variations in the number of shells worked across rows to accommodate the different finished bust measurements.
