Claiseach Hat by Liz Corke
What Is Being Made
Claiseach is a knitted beanie hat designed to showcase yarn beautifully. The name means "furrows" in Scottish Gaelic, reflecting the pattern's distinctive design. This hat is available in multiple sizes to fit toddlers, children, teens, adults, and large adults, with finished head circumferences ranging from 40 cm (15.5") to 52 cm (20.75"). The pattern offers both standard beanie and slouchy versions, allowing knitters to choose their preferred fit and silhouette.
Design Features and Construction
The Claiseach features a striking visual element: two garter stitch columns that run vertically up either side of the hat. This simple but effective design creates textural interest while remaining accessible to intermediate-level knitters. The garter stitch columns provide a clean, defined look that complements the surrounding stocking stitch fabric. The designer notes this hat pairs beautifully with the Dromanach fingerless mitts, making it an ideal companion piece for a coordinated set.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitches used include:
- Stocking stitch – the main fabric throughout the hat, worked in the round
- Garter stitch – featured in the two decorative columns running up the sides of the hat
- Increases – m1l (make one left) increases are used in the pattern shaping
The hat is worked in the round using circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs), which creates a seamless construction. Stitch markers are essential for tracking pattern repeats and size increases throughout the project.
Materials and Specifications
The Claiseach is designed for DK weight yarn, a versatile weight that creates a fabric with excellent drape and stitch definition. The pattern was tested using Eden Cottage Yarns Hayton DK, a premium blend of 80% Merino, 10% Nylon, and 10% Cashmere with a yardage of 245 yards per 100 grams.
