Chunky Cardigan by Jutta Maria Guerth
What is Being Made
The Chunky Cardigan is a substantial, wearable knitted cardigan designed for intermediate knitters. This project creates a full-button-front cardigan with structured shaping at the armholes, neckline, and shoulders. The finished garment is available in sizes M/L/XL and features a classic cardigan silhouette with set-in sleeves and a crew neckline.
Materials Required
This cardigan project requires 650 grams of knitting yarn in aran or chunky weight (approximately 90 meters per 50 grams, or 98 yards per 50 grams). Knitters will need size 7.5 knitting needles, a tapestry needle for finishing, and 6 buttons for the front closure. The yarn weight and needle size combination produces a gauge of 11 stitches and 17 rows per 10 centimeters (4 inches square), which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Chunky Cardigan employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate skill levels. Casting on begins the back piece with 64 stitches. Stockinette stitch forms the main fabric, created by alternating knit rows with purl rows to produce the classic smooth, V-textured knit fabric. Binding off is used strategically throughout construction: first to shape the armholes by binding off stitches on each side over multiple rows, then to shape the neckline by binding off stitches in the center back, and finally to bind off shoulder stitches progressively to create proper shoulder seaming points.
Stitches and Shaping Details
The pattern uses several essential knitting stitches and abbreviations:
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch creating the front face of stockinette
- Purl stitch (p) – the reverse stitch alternated with knits to build stockinette fabric
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used in shaping
- Slip slip knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease for refined shaping
- Yarn over (yo) – creates decorative eyelets or lace details
The back piece is constructed over 80 rows in stockinette stitch before armhole shaping begins. Armhole shaping involves binding off 5 stitches once, then 3 stitches once on each side, worked every 2 rows, reducing the stitch count to 48 stitches. After 34 additional rows from the armhole, neckline shaping occurs: 14 stitches are bound off in the center back, followed by binding off 4 stitches on each side in the next row. Simultaneously, shoulder shaping is worked on the outside edges with progressive bind-offs of 6 stitches, then 7 stitches every 2 rows, leaving 13 stitches per shoulder for seaming.
Craft Approach
This is a knitting project using traditional two-needle knitting methods. The design emphasizes classic cardigan construction with careful shaping to create a well-fitted garment. The chunky yarn weight allows for relatively quick project completion while the intermediate difficulty level assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, gauge work, and multi-step shaping sequences.
