What is Being Made

The Chunky Beehive Turban Hat is a stylish, structured turban-style hat designed to fit a range of head sizes from extra small through large. This knitting pattern creates a slouchy, textured hat with a distinctive beehive construction that combines ribbed and stocking stitch sections for visual interest and comfortable wear. The design is suitable for those seeking an intermediate-level knitting project with professional finishing.

Garment Specifications and Sizing

This pattern is available in four sizes to accommodate different head circumferences:

  • Extra Small (XS): To fit 40–45 cm (16–18 inches) head circumference; finished measurement 45 cm (18 inches)
  • Small (S): To fit 45–50 cm (18–20 inches) head circumference; finished measurement 50 cm (20 inches)
  • Medium (M): To fit 50–55 cm (20–22 inches) head circumference; finished measurement 55 cm (22 inches)
  • Large (L): To fit 55–60 cm (22–24 inches) head circumference; finished measurement 60 cm (24 inches)

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques that create texture and structure. The hat utilizes ribbing to create elastic, fitted sections that provide shape and comfort around the head. Stocking stitch (alternating knit and purl rows) forms the main body of the hat, creating a smooth, classic fabric. The pattern incorporates strategic increases and decreases to shape the crown and achieve the distinctive beehive silhouette. The alternating pattern sections of ribbing and stocking stitch build the characteristic textured appearance of the finished hat.

Stitches Used

The Chunky Beehive Turban Hat pattern uses the following essential stitches:

  • Knit (K): The fundamental stitch forming the basis of the fabric
  • Purl (P): Used in combination with knit stitches to create texture and pattern variation
  • Stocking Stitch (St.St): Created by alternating knit rows and purl rows, forming the smooth main body sections
  • Rib (R): A knit-one, purl-one (K1, P1) pattern that creates elastic, textured bands throughout the hat
  • Decrease (Dec): Knitting or purling two stitches together to shape the crown and reduce stitch count
  • Increase (Inc): Knitting or purling into both the front and back of a stitch to add stitches where needed for shaping

Materials and Yarn Requirements

The Chunky Beehive Turban Hat is designed to be worked with aran or chunky weight yarn, which creates the substantial, textured fabric characteristic of this style. The pattern specifies Debbie Bliss Alpaca Silk in aran thickness as the recommended yarn, though any similar aran or chunky weight yarn can be substituted. Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Extra Small: 2 × 50g balls
  • Small: 2 × 50g balls
  • Medium: 3 × 50g balls
  • Large: 4 × 50g balls

The pattern calls for one pair of 5.00 mm (US size 8) knitting needles to achieve the correct tension. Working at a tension of 18 stitches and 22 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) in pattern on these needles ensures the hat will fit properly and display the intended stitch definition and drape.

Pattern Construction

The hat begins with casting on between 70 and 100 stitches depending on size. The construction starts with a ribbed cuff section that provides elasticity and comfort at the band. The main body is then worked in a repeating pattern that alternates between stocking stitch sections and ribbed sections, creating the textured beehive effect. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and
