Chunky Basket Weave Blanket by Daisy Gray Knits

What is Being Made

The Chunky Basket Weave Blanket is a super cosy knitted throw designed by Daisy Gray Knits. This is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern that produces a finished blanket measuring approximately 56 x 64 inches, making it an ideal size for a lap throw or bed accent piece. The design combines visual texture with exceptional warmth, perfect for creating a luxurious home accessory.

Craft and Techniques

This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty, though the pattern notes it is very easy to execute. The blanket is created by holding two strands of super chunky yarn together throughout the entire project, which counts as a single stitch. This doubling technique creates exceptional thickness and visual impact while reducing the overall number of stitches required on the needles. The pattern uses a repeating 8-row sequence worked over 85 cast-on stitches, with the repeat worked 16 additional times to achieve the desired length. The construction includes simple garter stitch borders—4 rows of knit stitches at both the bottom and top edges—which frame the main pattern section and provide a finished appearance.

Stitches Used

The Chunky Basket Weave Blanket employs fundamental knitting stitches that create visual interest through strategic placement:

  • Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout, creating smooth vertical columns
  • Purl stitch (P): Used in alternating blocks to create the basket weave texture effect
  • Garter stitch: Formed by knitting every row, used for the 4-row borders at top and bottom

The main pattern sequence repeats an 8-row cycle that alternates knit and purl stitches in specific arrangements. Row 2 establishes the pattern with K9, followed by a repeat of p3, k5 to the last 4 stitches. Subsequent rows shift these stitch placements to create the characteristic basket weave visual effect—a textured, dimensional surface that resembles interlocking woven blocks. This interplay of knit and purl stitches produces both aesthetic appeal and structural integrity.

Materials and Specifications

The Chunky Basket Weave Blanket requires super chunky weight yarn totaling approximately 1800 grams or 1980 metres. The pattern specifies using 15 mm circular knitting needles (UK size 15 mm / US size 19). Circular needles are recommended even for flat knitting projects of this size, as they accommodate the large number of stitches comfortably and reduce strain on the hands and wrists. The tension is set at 6 stitches over 9 rows equaling 10 x 10 cm, which helps crafters verify their gauge before committing to the full project. The super chunky yarn weight ensures rapid project completion and creates the distinctive bold texture characteristic of this design.

Pattern Notes

The pattern includes standard knitting abbreviations: K for knit, P for purl, St(s) for stitch(es), Patt for pattern, and Rep for repeat. The PDF notes that the blanket can be made larger by adjusting the number of repeats of the 8-row sequence beyond the recommended 16 additional repeats, allowing crafters to customize the finished dimensions to their preferences.
